I find myself needing a bit of help with the complexities of a family death,.... my father who was living in Portugal with my brother. Due to breakdown of family relations, I have not been officially told by my brother and only got to find out via the husband of my cousins daughter long after my father should have been buried.

Are there any members of the Parish who reside there and or know the system or have useful contacts who can help? In particular I need to obtain a copy of the death certificate from the Portuguese register even though I am not the person who notified the death. I also need to find out if he wrote a will in Portugal? (I know that in the UK, all wills are published once Probate has been extracted. Does the Portuguese system do similar?)

Obviously I have looked on the internet. I did find a government site but.... it’s in Portuguese.. I don’t know Adam from Eve when it comes from provenance of local specialists. And these are not the usual circumstances of a death so it is going to be messy.. Even a steer on who is good would be much helpful.

I think you're in for a hard time and I only have limited knowledge. Funerals normally take place the day after death and from what I remember in my in-laws cases, the undertaker registers the death. Trying to sort anything yourself from the UK will be almost impossible and even if over here, you will have to prove your right to any copy documents IF you can even get appointments in the departments, everything is in a mess thanks to Covid . AFAIK wills are not registered and many of us have a declaration in our UK ones to allow estates to be handled under UK law.

If he has not left a will and his estate comes under Portuguese law, it's divided between spouse and children and if there's no spouse, the oldest child normally becomes head of the family responsible for sorting the mess. Your best chance may be to employ a solicitor here to look into it but that will be expensive.
