I want to visit the isle of wight but nearly every time we have been for a few days, the weather has turned and we have had an horrendous trip back to Poole, which has put the first mate off going. Is there anywhere like Lymington or Keyhaven that we could leave the boat for a couple of days if it did cut up rough while we where over there, so we could bus or train home and pick the boat up later.

Not too sure about Keyhaven - doesn't it dry there?
Lymington would be the cheaper option.
Beaulieu would be pleasant as well, although more expensive.

You may wish to check how much it will cost to overnight at either of the Lymington marinas or Beaulieu

All three charge like wounded rhinos in the words of my husband /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If you got stuck there for any length of time it could be very, very expensive.

Beaulieu is £31 per day for 27-39ft at the marina.
Or £10 per day on a mooring.

It's at the upper end of the scale, but even somewhere like Mercury Marina on the Hamble would be £28.80 for a 9m boat.

Of course there is! Why don't you buy relevant pilot books like The Solent Cruising Companion (£14.59 from Amazon)?
And by the sound of it a few charts wouldn't come amiss either.
Perhaps RYA Day Kipper would be useful too.

It's a steep learning curve!

If he left it for a week that would be £217.00

Thats a lot of money in these tight times especially if you are already paying mooring fees elsewhere

If I was paying Lymington or Beaulieu daily rates I would want to be there to enjoy it as imho they are the brilliant places to stay

It may work out cheaper to stay at Yarmouth and get the ferry across as I understand Yarmouth ar offering discounts to get people to stay.

RYA Day Kipper? Is that a snoozing course or a fish smoking course? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Its worth digging out your copy of Solent Cruising guide, as it does answer your question with contact details.

Best bet as I presume your usually getting stuck at the end of a weekend, Lymington Harbour master or Keyhaven HM will have the "most reasonable" swing or pontoon moorings for a couple of days in the western solent, and there more likely to be free if your having to leave it sun/mon as most visiters have moved on.

Yarmouth an option, but those ferry tickets can really stack up... although they've just laid visiters bouys outside yarmouth and they do have a harbour taxi as will Beaulieu in summer if you can sub rent a swing mooring for a couple days...

Either way there's no cheap answer, just possibly less than the obvious Haven/Berthon etc...

.. the Solent has so many good bolt holes, but as you already know a few I will mention some you have not which importantly for you have good access and security if you plan to desert the boat for a week and need public transport away from the marina..

Hythe - very secure, has a lock (very easy), available all states of tide for mobo's, you could even catch the Hythe ferry from the pier straight into So'ton centre for the train

Ocean Village - right in Southampton centre... what more can I say

Hamble Point, just at the mouth of the Hamble, but a taxi ride away from a train station... and even a bit of a walk to Hamble Village

Port Hamble marina ... yes its another MDL... but in the heart of the Village and bus stop just 4 minutes walk away!

I won't mention Mercury, Swanwick or Universal... why would you motor past the above 2 and go further up the Hamble if you just need to abandon the boat.... however all nice marina's with Very good facilities and worth visiting IMO...

As you say you have all the pilot books etc I guess it was just a general "where would you go if... " question. Of course if you are down the west end of the Solent all the marina's above will be little journey, but all depends of where the wind is coming from. Once you get into So'ton water it is so protected Hythe / Ocean Village etc is just as easy to get to as Port Hamble or Mercury etc and certainly the closer you are to So'ton the better transport options you would get for your travel home. But of course Lymington you could get a taxi / train back to Poole, but just some alternatives...

I believe it is fish smoking... but I am sure malaprop will be very happy to correct us all!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I would second Hythe. Very secure especially if bad weather is the issue. The Hythe ferry (£2.50) drops you off at town quay then a free bus every 10-15 mins to the train station. The bus does pause at West Quay shopping centre so overt swimbo's eyes!!

Lymington is good but the train times are quite poor where as routes from Southampton Central down west are often to say the least. Keyhaven dries out and is tricky to nav the first time espcially if the wind whips up from the west as the wavelets distort the view.

Still perhaps you should not worry about the weather and just go for it so that a certian formite can praise you on your seamanship and the fact your getting out of the solent....or is seamanship making a safe and considered decision with pre planning such as you are doing now? No brainer to me and good on yer /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

From Hythe, you can get the ferry across to the east side of the water, and there's a bus to the station, so thats very easy.
But the forecast are pretty reliable for a few days ahead, so you should be able to make a bolt for home well before the weather comes in? Just keep an eye for wind over tide through the west end of the Solent, and the rest of the way home, probably taking the castle exit, right close in. And remember to keep well clear of Christchuch ledge.
Bear in mind that its pretty sheltered in the Solent, so remember not to use that as your judge of the conditions!!
