Portable Gensets - wolf

Can someone explain to me what power genset I require for the following plan.

I like spending time at anchor but due to a number of reasons did not spec a generator when ordering the boat.

I found last season I could manage 2 days ok - even with nav gear on etc. However I like to have a hot shower and would like to top up the charge on my aux 12v batteries etc which went down to 10/11v. This would extend the duration away from marinas.

What I would like to do is carry a Wolf type genset over the summer months in the Laz and run this either on the F/B or swim platform for a couple of hours a day switching the power to my 'shorepower switchboard' and then running the charger for 1 to 2 hrs then switching to the hot water system for the same time before switching off and restowing.

What power would I need and are the new portable gensets (I am thinking Wolf from Screw-fix) quiet enough without the whole anchorage throwing things at me...

Advice sought, Thanks

Michael

dont know about noise level but would be worried about that aspect. They are always fundamentally noisy due to air cooled design. The biggest single load you mention is water heater. This will have a rating marked on it but is probly 1Kw. In whch case, that's the minimum power rating you need, or say 5 amps at 220v. Best to get a bit more, to be on safe side

The quietest units are the hondas, but sticking it on your bathing platform is a tad un-neighbourly

Re: ahem

i have a generator for sale which is dead quiet but a bit surplus to requirement. It's a honda 1000 w jobby (um yes, exactly like an erstwhile poster now banned) E10summink. I think it cost 650 quid, retail 750 quid. soo, erm anyone wanna buy it? (toaster not included)

dunno bout the wolf thingy. the ones in open cages make a right old racket.

Agree with jfm in that I think you're looking at at least a 1000W for the calorifier plus another 1000W for a kettle plus, if SWMBO fires up the hairdryer thats another 1200W or so which is why the minimum size of gennie fitted by boatbuilders is around 4KVA
I had a Honda 650W petrol gennie a few years ago on a boat and that just coughed and died if only one of the above was switched on so I reckon you'll have to get at least a 1500W jobbie. The other prob is that most portable gennies dont have much of a fuel tank so you'll have to refuel it every 1-2hrs
Agree with the others on noise. Even the small enclosed portable gennies are a bit too noisy to fire up on deck in close proximity to other boats

Re: ahem

um, wd have thort for brand new and run for 10 mins wd surely be worth £400.

Scottish eh? ok, i will make sure the cheque clears first and stipulate that you FORGET any ideas about wingeing over the delivery van if he smashes up the paving slabs again. Anyway if you were really really scottish the path would be made of heather liberated off the moors.

This may seem silly but, Why not run the main engine for say 30 mins

batteries topped up via the 60 amp alternator and hot water supplied by engine heat.

the extra used in fuel is much less than the cost of a generator ??

probably will make less noise!

just a thought.

Re: ahem

Yes, interested in the honda thingy.

Will you have it on your boat this w/e in Mercury?. Thinking I could listen to it and pay you then&there.

Thanks for the prompt replies - I am a bit worried about the noise, but as long as it sounds better than a big main engine running at 1200rpm then will have a bash.
Obviously want to keep the thing small and as light as possible for lugging up and out of the laz. So will only use for one item at a time ie charger then water etc.

Oddly, thats what I thought when I spec the boat!

The makers man who has done all the after sales stuff advised me to go this route too.

Just with all the stuff on here recently on running smelly large engines and the damage running them without enough load made me wonder if the small petrol option might be better.
