Use any of the popular search engine toolbars - I use Google - works a treat.
Use any browser other than Internet Explorer ....

Check your virus definitions are up to date ....

Download and run Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/ to resolve your pop-up issue.

I'll second the Google tool bar. Works well, and you can even make it do a nice popping noise for every pop up it blocks.

Depends what sort of pop-up you refer to, if they are browser related then pop-up killers as mentioned in previous posts will see them off. However if they appear as message windows (grey window as in ms windows error messages etc) then these are caused by microsoft messenger service which is designed for networks but is left open as default and allows abuse by certain unscrupulous advertisers. If it is the latter case then it is a simple matter to turn messenger service off, can't remember just now but can look it up for you if required.

The Google toolbar does not really solve the problem. If you don't remove the spyware using a product like Ad-Aware, your bandwidth will continue to be sucked up and your activity will continue to be monitored by the plethoria of spy software running in the background, even if the popups are being blocked. You really need to remove the spyware.

IMO opinion, toolbars like Google & Yahoo are nothing but more junk that I don't want on my browser.

If the problem is simply window popups, then tool bars like Google do indeed solve the prooblem entirely, and stop the bandwidth being sucked up as you put it.

Spyware is an entirely different problem, and usually vastly overstated (most spyware classifies cookies as spyware for instance, when 99.99% of them are benign)

Brendan, yes you are correct in the sense that using Google (or preferably Firefox / IE with XP sp2) will block almost all popups, however the gentleman indicated that he was getting "loads" of pop-ups which he did not have a problem with until recently. In my experience this symptom is invariably the result of spyware.

The thing to do is to first confirm that his computer is not hosting spyware and thereafter, if he still wishes to block the remaining pop-ups, consider using Firefox or if he is running Windows XP upgrade to sp2.

Go onto google and lookup 'spybot', go to the site, it is shareware, download it and run it. It is easy, even a technoclutz like me can do it. I run spybot about once a fortnight and it usually deletes one or two. If you have any problems please PM me and I'll send you more details.

The solution is in my first response: download and run Ad-Aware and it will remove the spyware. It's as simple as that.
