Poole Boat Park

I don't think there is anything in the way of financial restitution. May be wrong but that's the impression I get. The propriertor does not own the freehold on the site. It was the case that Poole Borough Council wants the site so tough.

Certainly I can't see there being much for the staff.

What will piss me off is that PBC take over the site, and then it sits there, for possibly years, with nothing being done.

I fear this may happen, as I hear the budget is already going out of control, and such public civil engineering projects don't have a great track record (Dome, Spinnaker Tower, Olympics, Baths in Bath, Millenium Bridge, Scottish Parliament etc., etc.)

Mind you, the bridge is small beer, about the cost of one brick for the Olympics. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
sorry the restitution will go to the freeholders obviously.

geoff - surely the Cobbs drystacking would make a lot of sense for you given your usage (and ability to get under the bridge)?

oth I can see Rockley working as well as you don't need/want to stay alongside but it's already pretty full up there for the current facilities although they are scaleable in some areas.
 
Not keen on Cobbs, being part of a big company they're OTT on Health & Safety. You're not allowed near your boat when it's in the compound.

I understand possible risks of people being where forklifts are operating, but it's never been an issue at PBP. But when carrying out a formal risk assesment........

Rockley possibly too far the other way. I'm going down tomorrow to see whats what.


Rockley indicated they had space last time I talked to them, but that was a couple of years back.

Southampton would be nearer to home for me, but it's a fair drag down Southampton Water from the Itchen. MDL on the hamble will be similar conditions to Cobbs, I expect.

A couple of boats ago I was dry stacked in Cobbs, after moving from Rockley. I know what you mean about the big company mentality, I've noticed it. However, I can have no complaints about the time I was in dry stack. The staff are first class. Also, There was never any issue with me getting access to the boat to clean it etc. They would always pull it out of the rack and pop it onto a cradle for me to clean etc.

A couple of other benefits, 10% discount on fuel, although thinking about it possibly not as cheap as correls, reasonable parking, good security and 15 days free berthing in any MDL marina.

They've just put up a load of new racking which I guess is to pre-empt the closure of PBP. It's not filling up that quick though so there may be a deal to be had.

Must admit we've always been very happy with Cobbs and the staff on the rack are excellent. Suggest if you pop in you catch up with Toby (Rack Supervisor) as he can chat through options. There's loads of space presently and aside from really busy summer days when it is manic (albeit not that likely so far this year!) there is plenty of space alongside.

As Ian mentions there are dedicated work racks outside the main forklift area. They are hot on not entering the forklift area but then that is not unusual nowadays. Give us a shout if there are any other questions i might be able to answer

Called in yesterday and spoke to Toby and the manager Dave. Very pleasant and very helpful people. The result is that they are keeping a slot for me to go to when the Boat Park closes.

Also called into Southampton, equally pleasant and helpful, but I'm afraid the Itchen and Southampton just not such a nice area as Poole.

Can I pick you up on your comments about MDL’s Health & Safety policies. As you quite rightly point out, our customers should not be exposed to the dangers associated with fork lift trucks and then there is the additional hazard of falling from height if you were permitted to work on your boat whilst it is stored in the racks. The hazards associated with fork lifts and working at height are high on the HSE's agenda at all times.

To allow customers access to their boats to carry out work, we relocate them to one of the 2 work areas which we have set aside which have minimum of 6 ground level racks available at any time with water and electricity laid on. It is only the launch area that is restricted.

Whilst we might appear to be ‘over the top’, it is for all the right reasons as I don't want to have to deal with a significant injury on my watch!

It would be good to have another forumite at Cobbs! Of course, in addition to the usual MDL stuff there is an excellent berthholders association and a good social thing going on. All in all we're pretty happy there.

You will have (at least ) an additional two forumites at Cobbs, as I along with Geoff have also booked a slot for the end of September. Look forward to meeting you and others.

I was really just pointing out that Poole Boat Park have operated an open yard policy for many, many years, and it has never been an issue. I have never as much as witnessed a potential hazard, let alone a near miss. I know you have to follow HSE rules and guidelines, but I still think it's OTT.

Anyway I visited Cobbs and the people there satisfied me that they could meet my needs, and I now look forward to berthing my boat at Cobbs.

Perhaps you might care to pass on my thanks to Dave and Toby for their fantastic reception and incredible helpfulness.
 
I hope to be down this weekend, too, Ian. It's looking like we might get some boating weather for a change. I've not really been out since my trip to the CI's with Duncan.

Certainly I'm hearing lot's of great things about Cobbs. I don't think I've met anyone who has anything but praise for the service and atmosphere at Cobbs.

In PBP's previous guise of Rotork, on the site that is now Moriconium Quay, someone got run over by the fork lift truck!
 
Certainly I am not aware of any such incident during the , nearly, 20 years at West Quay Road. Although, the incident you recall, probably was with one of the fork lift trucks currently in use /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There was an incident a couple of years back when a boat fell from the forks, from a height of about 1 metre.

I think that overall, their safety record has been very good. No TLI in probably over 20 years. Not many oraganisations can claim that.

I'm reliably informed that both the son (ollie) and the elderly guy damage a couple of boats a month . Not normally that serious, just the odd windscreen, bathing platform etc, although they have on occassions launched boats without the bungs in as well! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
 
I don't think your information is that reliable.

There was one bit of damage to a bathing platform a while back, but that is hardly a couple a month!!!

An owner left a trim down before a lift which caused some grief. It is not unreasonable to expect owners to ensure tabs are up and bungs in.

I think most yards would decline liabilty in such circumstances.

The operators usually do check bungs, but it can't be guaranteed, especially when some boats have bungs and some don't. The last time I can recall a boat being launched without a bung was about 3 years ago.

I've had boats berthed at PBP for 9 years, and never had any cause for complaint. I've found the service and facilities first class. I will mourn the loss of this superb site, and wish the staff and management well for the future.

On the up side, I look forward to being equally satisfied, if not more so, with the dry berthing at Cobbs Quay.
