A perfect example of a [sh!t] website. ALL the info is in TEXT for heaven's sake. Don't these people have access to digital camera's or even have a camera on their phone yet?
The whole essence of the web is its ability to allow you to post pictures easily . . . . They look as though they are still communicating by Telex.
PS, sorry about using the word sh!t, but the silly censor programme won't let me use the milder word C R A P! Bless 'em

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah well, most of us can read up here . . .
Dunedin, if you are going there anyway why do you need to know the exact parking arrangements before you arrive?? And if there is no room at the Inn then Portovadie just across the way will have loads of space and is considerably cheaper.
Don'cha just love us yotties! A harbour authority run by a bunch of unpaid volunteers spends hundreds of thousands of pounds putting in new facilities which are barely bolted down before we start whingeing about the website and lack of information.
I think that I would prefer to be able to say "Great facilities - shame about the website" than "Great website - shame about the facilities".
Well said Tiercel, although I didn't know Peter and the lassie wi' the dug were unpaid. Look forward to testing the facilities soon, probably the scuttlebutt alternative to cc09.
I wouldn't like to give the impression that Tarbert Harbour Authority don't pay their staff. Peter and his assistants/deputies are indeed paid for their labours, but I was referring to the harbour trustees who had the imagination and balls to make the whole thing possible.
I have just returned to Tarbert after a couple of years cruising down to the Aegean and was very pleasantly surprised by the new developments in the harbour. Lets hope they have plenty of satisfied customers in 2009.
So, the reason I was looking for info beforehand was that I was planning to arrive solo, and thought it may be dark (and perhaps sub zero)
In fact had a great sail up - left 11am and sailed all the way to withn 2 miles of Tarbert when finally switched on the engine at 3:20pm as the sun had gone below the Mull and would soon be getting chilly.
Wasn't over concerned about being busy - saw two other boats in the distance all day. More concerned on the 1st that the Victoria might not be serving meals, but fortunately they were open and serving (albeit limited menu) - even blagged a pint of milk as no shops (even chippie closed!).
So the answer is there are two large pontoons sticking out at 90 degrees to the old pontoon. The first as you enter is the visitor berthing. Warning, the small finger pontoons (28ft or so) are VERY bouncy. I went on carefully in case of ice, and was very glad I had - very wobbly till tied boat firmly to support it ! There is a short bit similar to the old pontoon as well.
Good modern facility. Some of us will take some time to get used to it. And will see if it increases or reduces capacity for Scottish Series. But probably preferred by many to the 5 boat rafts.
PS written on the new Samsung NC10 netbook whilst having breakfast, using the free wireless broadband from Tarbert pontoon ;-)
My favourite spot in Tarbet is the small bay on the porthand side ( The one with 2 orange poly buoy's in ) just before you get to the old wooden pier as you approach from the east. I always anchor in there weather and wind permitting....its a bit tight for swinging room due to depth but its free!!!!!.....not only that a short walk to the Columba.....with its Loch Fyne ales, that was until it shut down!!! roll on it opening again.

Really? I had heard it was because if they didn't make major improvements the CCC would up anchor and move the Scottish Series from Tarbert to somewhere a bit more friendly mainly due due to the lack of imagination and said balls of the Tarbert community. So there. You have been away from Tarbert for much too long. It was ££££££ signs.
AJA, I can understand why you might make that comment, particularly after the 2006 Series (or was it 2007?) where, I am told, there were some problems. However, the 2008 Series was universally declared a success - and that was using the old pontoon system.
I believe that a change in the legislation governing trust harbours, allied to a partnership with Crown Estates, made it possible to make the new improvements and they happened without delay, due in no small part to the drive of the harbour trustees.
As I understand it, the main benefits accrue from the ability to have more permanent berthholders and more attractive berths for visitors. I am sure that it will also make things considerably better for the Scottish Series but it would appear not to be the raison d'etre for the new pontoons.
Lets hope that, as a result, Tarbert harbour has a lot more satisfied visitors hereafter.
that's a very blinkered rosetinted view on what had been happening in Tarbert. 2007 was the nadir of boats being rafted out.
For the last three years the CCC had the foresight to arrange to rent pontoons from Glasgow Council, have them towed all the way down river for the week, installed at the fish pier and then removed and returned to the old Garden Festival site. No wonder the CCC were fundamentally fed up with Tarbert dragging their feet.
It was only last year, 2008, that any improvement was seen.
Being blinkered and wearing rose tinted specs would indeed be an interesting and uncomfortable fashion choice and not one which I have often been accused of choosing. I suppose that it could also be argued, not unreasonably, that you are taking a world-weary and cynical view of the situation.
However,I am happy to bow to your, apparently, superior knowledge on this subject.
Nonetheless this doesn't stop me feeling that the voluntary, unpaid members of the harbour authority have made an intelligent, courageous and not entirely risk free (to themselves) decision quicky and effectively. Only time will tell I suppose.
I was in Tarbert on Sun 29th March assisting taking a friends yacht up through Crin an Canal. It was my first visit since the day they started installing the new pontoons.
I am a regular in Tarbert so was keen to see the new pontoons. An aerial pic can be found on this link http://www.clydesailing.co.uk/09_jan_feb.htm
I had heard that the only about 25% of the pontoons were to be for permanent berths as the the main reason for the pontoons was to attract visitors. It however appears that more than 60% of the pontoons have been given over to permanent berths which at about £1600 for the year is a bargain but now severely limits the number of visitor berths.
Permanent berths other than their annual fee will not bring business to Tarbert as they arrive late Friday night have a drink on board then set off on Sat morning and return Sun night and get in their cars and off.
The new pontoons have now severely reduced the maneuvering space in the harbour and means that the setting of fenders and warps will now have to be undertaken outside the harbour not an easy task when single handed and if a day like we had on our visit. Rafting out on the main sections of pontoon appear restricted now.
I found the finger we used which are about 11/12 mtr and 1 mtr wide very very unstable when I stepped on and thought I was going to end in the water which would have happened had my other crew mate stepped on it.
Unless there has been a change the showers are still charged but I have never had a problem queueing for the showers since they were extended some time ago. Mary has got to be congratulated for how immaculate the toilets are kept.
We found on the Sunday night many of the restaurant kitchens were closed and we ate in the Victoria which would not be my first choice but we had a nice meal. Being a Cold Sunday night Tarbert was like a grave.
As to Portavdie I think in future it will be my port of call and the friendly welcome from Karen, Robert and their crew. The new toilets and showers are open and Robert says they are about the best around. The Restaurant missed the Easter opening but is due to open this weekend 25 April.
