Now bet that got your attention..!!!!!

In the latest issue of Australian Yachting, there is a double page spread with the caption “a fair day for sailing on the unusually quiet Solent.”
It shows two yachts under shy spinnakers (W77 & looks like GB2-7077), plus of course the mandatory blonde in bikini (she must be an Aussie as she is good looking and well tanned), sitting on the rocks as the yachts go by.
Got me thinking.. we hear , sometimes via this BB , how rough the Solent is, how bad the conditions are, etc etc.. So much so that one almost expects it to be bad every day.. To see a photo of a “lovely day for sailing” was a bit of a surprise.
Then again, I have crossed Bass Strait dozens of times, some in 70 kts, some where you motor all the way .. No doubt you guys hear about how notorious Bass Straight is.

Hey I think the blonde is “ peroxide”

As a fellow Antipodean I was attracted to your post because I thought you were going to have a go at British beaches (refer to the British beach thread). Haven't we (and others too) all been so good reserving our opinion on that one (you have been especially good not mentioning the zillions of miles of white sand beaches on the southern coast of Victoria and deserve a prize for that /forums/images/icons/smile.gif)?

Oi, don't you go knocking our our beautiful beaches, leave us something to be proud of.
Two things I noticed about Aussie beaches:~
1/ You are years behind us in the developement of litter, graffiti & vandalism. Even those free barbecue ranges seldom get smashed or nicked. You've a lot of catching up to do there.
2/ With all the miles of lovely deserted beaches and secluded coves, why do you all herd together in places like Bondi, Manley & Surfers? Is it because of years of interbreeding with sheep?

I chartered a boat in the Whitsundays last year. That Whitehaven beach is not too bad, but loads of Pommie backpackers kept arriving.

After years of successful propaganda to keep the place to ourselves, someone goes and prints a picture like that. The Solent is the most awful place in the world for sailing aso nobody should ever even think of coming here to visit it and make it even more crowded.
Anyone wearing a bikini today would have plenty of sun, and it is a lovely mild 4.4 Celcius with a gentle F2 northwesterly this morning so she'd have goosebumps if not hypothermia. It has been known to get warmer in the summer.

"Australian Yachting is aimed at the owners and crews of yachts over 20 feet. It covers monohulls, multihulls, inshore and offshore racing, coastal cruising and passagemaking. Australian Yachting appeals to all those interested in larger yachts and thus represents an affluent audience for your sales message. Australian Yachting is an ideal platform for companies marketing their products to yacht owners. <font color=red>The majority of our readers are successful businessmen, professionals or senior management who spend their leisure time on the water</font color=red>."

Comes straight off the AY publishers website. It got me wondering if the users of the board thought of themselves in such glowing terms?

The girl in the picture is in fact English her boyfriend is a rugby player ,Ithink his name is Wilkinson .

Solent sailors call it a gale when the G and T wont stay on the table going to windward.

reality check...

<zillions of miles of white sand beaches on the southern coast of Victoria >

sure they look great - until you put a toe in the surf and get instant hypothermia - that stuff has ice floating in it! and the surfers all wear wet suits even in summer. when the wind blows off the sea and the temperature goes down to 25 you all whinge like the proverbial poms at having to put on strides and cover up the tan. if we ever get 25 degrees we're out celebrating.

With regard to question 2, it's because these beaches are as close as the poor deprived Aussies can get to New Zealand.
