FORGET bird watching and knitting, Brownies are more likely to be caught juggling or "discovering faith" to win their badges.

The system of working towards a new badge has been given a make-over with politically correct hobbies replacing the more traditional Brownie pursuits.

Among the old badges that have been dropped are: bird-watcher, chess, conservation, dinghy sailor, house orderly, knitter, needlecraft, safety in the home, thrift and walking.

The new badges that have been introduced include: Brownie traditions, circus performer, disability awareness, discovering faith, entertainer, environment, finding your way, out and about, science investigator, and wildlife explorer.

Moral philosophy badge

There's a new badge for teenagers based on an understanding complex of moral relativities. Holders of the badge can say "It's so unfair" with absolute certainty!

Ahh Ken
I'm glad I'm not the only 24/365 bank that offers interest free non-returnable loans.

I know this was a few days old but had to say something. Couldn't butt in earlier as I was busy helping run a fun weekend for my Brownie pack.

I am not sure where you got your info but you are wrong !

The New Brownie Watersports badge -
Clause 3
Take part in at least four sessions from one of the following watersports, or a similar water activity-
Canoeing
Rafting
Rowing
Sailing
Water skiing
Wind surfing

Clause 4 - for your chosen watersport:
Show the tester what you would wear.
Know the safety rules.

Most of the badges you say were dropped have been rewritten and renamed, and more importantly updated. Some had stayed the same for over 30 years! For example House Orderly becomes Home Skills and Safety in the Home is now Home Safety. Also some of the new badges you mention have been around for over 10 years - Science Investigator.

BTW Amongst the new badges is a Water Safety Badge, not a bad thing when you think of some of the tragic incidents that were reported on this forum during the summer months.

Ruth (Guider 1st Height Brownies)

PS If you have relevant experience and qualifications you might find that you can be of help to Brownies and Guides locally as an advisor to cover watersports or boating.

Ruth,

Thanks for putting the record straight, it just goes to show you can't believe anything you read in the papers.I am also relieved to see jet-skis or PWC's are not included in the craft list.Good luck with your sailing activities.

Re: Do\'nt be daft!

Don't worry I think you lot you be terrified of my little angels - Salford's best - very street wise and worldly wise. At a large event full of well behaved "girls" and their very traditional Guiders I got asked "Who said that fat woman could be in charge?" If you see our lot coming I'd get out of their way... I would.

Sailing has been quite helpful for my guiding - We were doing compass skills earlier this year and I took in some practice charts that they thought were brilliant. We finished off by going to the local country park and they had a go at a short orienteering course, I took our handheld GPS and can now reveal that a Brownies average speed is 1.1 mph !!
