Please could anyone advise on choice of a good but cheapish polisher so I can compound my hull. I want a "real" polisher rather than one of those lightweight car polishers from Halfords. The last one I had (borrowed too, oops) has died and I still have 2/3rds of the boat to go.....

Thanks in advance.

I hire mine out but its a bit far for you to come and get it. I have the lightweight ones which are actually up to the job as used in th Marine trade and aouto trade. Made by Rupes. Used with a 3M hookit pad they work really well.

Hi Dom,

That's the kinda thing I am after - except they are VERY expensive to buy.

Am looking around at hire shops now......

I got mine from ebay, its really good, its one of the proper ones with different colour pads that come in different colours for different strengths of foam for cutting back/polishing etc.. Have a look under polisher. Mine was around £50 and Im really pleased with it. Cutting paste (Farecla) can be obtained from screwfix
For cutting back and polishing you need a slow speed, also make sure you mask off any stuck on coachlines, coz it'll soon go through them with the polisher also mask off any chrome trim and anything else you dont want to ruin.
Oh and dont speak to anyone whilst you're doing it, coz you will soon have polished a hole through it from not concentrating on what you were supposed to be doing.
I find it really therapuetic, you can spend all morning machine polishing then admire it all afternoon
Regards
Chris

search "silverline"...or "toolstation" or something similar. Costs about £35-45. get plenty of sponge pads because they shred if you catch a cleat or summit !!
farecla polisher/compounds- the names are very confusing, but Id suggest 3,6 and 10 (but 10 is super, super fine)
The polisher is a bit heavy to be honest, but then its £250 cheaper ! Looks like it will run forever, though!

Belive me Colin, I would love to, trouble is I just couldn't get clearance from the missus. I have enough of my own stuff to do, if it wasnt for the missus, the kids, bloody customers, bloody tenants, I would be over there like a shot !

Still believe me, the results with the polisher will be superb !
