Polish!

Believe I've read somewhere that polish for glass fibre hulls should be silicone free... Is this true?... Why?... Don't want to pay what seems to be vastly inflated prices for `boat polishes' when a car polish seems likely to so the same job. Any recommendations taking into account the former silicone question....... Thanks.

I've used the same polish for car and boat - a silicone polish, "enriched with urethane" - whatever that is.

To remove stains, I used some patio cleaner! It is almost the same as Australian K&H fibreglass cleaner, except that it is not as strong. The main ingredient? Hydrochloric acid at 10%, where the K&H cleaner is 18%.

I then went over the hull sides with the silicone polish. No detrimental effect. The only down side is if you ever want to paint the hull. Then you need to remove the silicone polish.

regards,
Philip

I would suggest you don't get silcones anywhere near your depth sounder mounting, it ruins the surface wetting and therefore the coupling into the water.
