Police Marine Unit

They seem to come upriver from Portsmouth up tp Fareham once or twice every day. They slow down and give me a good look over wnen I am on the boat.

Did the OP mean the civilian police? I see the Hampshire units out quite often, in Portsmouth it is often the MOD police whose main role is anti terrorism security and don`t like you within 50 metres of an MOD ship or jetty, also armed: usually I get a cheery wave from their wheelhouse but have seen them on deck in combat gear with an automatic weapon so treat with respect!

I've regularly seen Semper Vigilo (or similar) in Loch Goil.
No doubt the subs have something to do with that.

I once got within 50yds of the quay at Coulport before a couple of cops looked up from their crosswords, ran out of their hut, got on to their boat and came to shoo me away. I think they were more embarrassed than angry.

In the good old days I sailed into the Holy Loch and was met by some Americans with automatic weapons who shouted unmentionable things and pointed stuff at us .. but they weren't police, they were just policing.

We were sailing on a friends boat with my son (12) on the helm, having a nice wee potter up Loch Goil. Suddenly a large black RIB appeared at high speed and I have never seen my son move so quick in releasing the helm :). They just gave us a wave and carried on.

How often do you see them out patrolling marinas and the coastline? Ever had any encounters/experiences?
There is a RIB and a large patrol boat berthed near me. Usually moored up and not manned but they go out sometimes, say twice a week, usually on crew training excercises, sometimes with SCUBA gear.
However, is not about what they do but about what they may be called on to do.
Imagine the outcry if there was an incident and no marine police were available.

Whenever I've been up that way, they've been patrolling the do-not-cross line; basically blasting up to the up-tide end and then drifting down-tide. They must get bored to death, especially during the week when there are few boats up there. A couple of times I've suspected them of deliberately shadowing me, but I'd do the same in their position, just to break the monotony! Of course, an ethnic Chinese lady in the cockpit may also push some buttons...

As previously posted

we were doing the Scottish series overnight race some (many) years ago and were sitting completely becalmed with the majority of the fleet spread out across the channel between inverkip and Dunoon about 2am
Along came not a spider but the MOD in Ribs and patrol boats . They very quietly came along side the boats they wanted grabbed the shrouds and gentility pulled them out of their way with minimal fuss .
Then a rather large submarine slipped past into the night.

Edit
A couple of years ago we took a couple of friends for a day sail in the Holy Loch who were Officers in the Slovak navy and it struck me just home things have changed

A few years ago, there was a warning published that, if you approached too close to an HMS, you'd be warned off. If you ignored the warning, you'd be deemed to have hostile intent. 50m would be plenty of time to turn my little Snapdragon into a colander, but I'm not sure if that would be enough to get past the "Oh shit they aren't stopping" moment and stop a big rib at full throttle. I ha' me doots that the Goalkeeper gun on the Queen Elizabeth is at that level of readiness.

I got pulled up by Hampshire's finest in my dinghy once. It was quite late at night - I'd had a drink with a mate in Haslar and was going back to my boat at Hardway. Good for them, I was in the midst of a lot of moored boats and could easily have been up to no good.

often see police boats on the thames, usually when a military ship is about to come down the thames.. once was on a buoy on my previous boat near greenwich having a picnic and was asked by the police what we were doing and then went on their way before a navy ship came past. now there seems to be special forces ribs accompaning the ships after the police have scouted ahead. was once in the trafalgar thames race and there was a few warships going down the thames, we got quite close to them and nothing was said or horn sounded
