Plotter charts

If you don't need waterproof then you could have 17" plotter and a local C-Map chart for £900. Have sailed on a boat with an earlier version of one these at the Nave table and it was excellent I thought. Owner didn't like it as much though.

That is a sweeping statement that I do not completely agree with. I use both NE and NW Nauticpath and have no need of other. Used UK South Coast without problem and also deep into Stockholm / Swedish Archipelago. The detail has agreed with official Swedish Paper charts, UK charts I have and see - in fact I used it on another guys boat this last season and he was so impressed with the detail and accuracy - he bought the new Lowrance model with same Nauticpath card for Archipelago use.

It is true for ANY chart system that there are areas of reduced detail - having delivered a boat from Rostock to Latvia last year a comparison of the Raymarine system and my piddly Lowrance 3500C - had my plotter unanimously agreed by all 3 of us on board as preferred plotter.

Nauticpath has similar faults to other systems - few updates and odd detail missing. But it gives huge coverage, good detail to get you where you're going and back again. As to intricate detail INSIDE a marina / small harbour - to expect and rely on a plotter is IMHO plain daft.
