A week or so ago I unfurled the genoa whilst motoring and noticed that it was hanging down like a sad pair of trousers. The problem was that the top of the upper roller reefing unit had come undone. Whilst in Newport, I borrowed a bosuns chair from a friendly Southerly owner, and hoisted the crew up to the top to retrive it. It had become unscrewed, and of course the first thing I did was to screw it back up again. Then however I couldnt unscrew it again, perhaps it has one of those childproof sort of threads on it. Does anyone know as to whats inside it? Plastimo doesnt seem to work so well when there are other halyards about, the problem was that the special bent shackle that Plastimo supply and the thimble are just the right height to fit as a spanner in the top part of the swivel unit. a twisted shackle would be better as it would not impinge on the top hand nut. A stainless steel worm drive clip with the screw holding the shackle off the nut works well so far. This is not the first time I have had problems with Plastimo roller reefing, the last time they changed the design of the top piece of the stay to stop it shredding the spinnaker halyard. Also has anyone actually recieved the catalog that they promised as a reward for filling in the questionair on compasses they put out.
