Awful place, keep east of Weymouth, nothing worth seeing west of there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes we are thinking of using The dart as a base and venture out? Aldernay for cheap juice, maybe Salcombe for a few nights to get some water pistol fights?

I have a project go live in the summer so can only take a week at a time so will have to leave the boat for a week and come back?

Tom

Dartmouth is a lovely place and has one of the most spectacular harbour entrances you'll see anywhere. OK a lot more spectacular than the Medway /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Weymouth is worth a visit on the way down but moor on the Town Quay not in the marina; it's much more fun. Lyme Regis is worth a visit but only in calm weather as you'll have to pick up a buoy outside the harbour. Don't go into the River Exe. They steal your fuel and ljs lives there. Teignmouth is not often visited as it has a slightly tricky entrance and there's no marina but you can park on a pontoon in the river. For chrissakes, don't go into the Lyme Bay House Hotel. My mother in law owns the place
Further round from Dartmouth, Salcombe is also a lovely harbour although the town is a bit OK Ya now. The mooring buoys in the harbour are a great place to tie up but affected by wash. There are plenty of great places further west incl the Scillies as jfm has pointed out but not sure if you'll have time to go further

Hi Tom,

Carry on around and up to Wales for a few days, stunning coastline along the Gower peninsula then perhaps on toward Tenby!

OK I just wanna see your boat drrrrrroooooooooool!

Rob

R Exe is worth a visit but don't go into the marina/docks, stay on the river. Might even be able to arrange a buoy for you for a day or two. And further upriver Topsham is lovely, well worth the effort getting there.

Lyme Regis is my favourite place but as Mike says only in settled offshore weather. And just along from there I love anchoring at Beer, again settled weather needed but sheltered from both N and W winds. Furtehr round towards Torquay Babbacombe is a lovely spot and just round from there is the cove just before Hopes Nose, the name of which escapes me. Very sheltered from W & N winds.
Teignmouth def wortha visit.
There's also Bigbury Bay with Burgh Island, another beautiful spot and again a good anchorage with settled offshore winds. And the R Yealm is magnificent.
The Scillies, heaven on earth. The Fal, could spend all summer there and not get bored.

So Tom, there's loads more to see but you won't do it in one short trip. See you in the summer!!

We are thinking of doing the same, makes me wonder how many others are also planning a trip to the west country.
It would be good to know who is travelling and when.

Strange that Teignmouth has the reputation it has. We arived there quite by accident a few years ago whilst waiting for a bit more tide in the Exe. Anyway, there were boats going in and out at low water, so I thought we'd give it a go. Dead easy and plenty of water. Great mooring on the HM's pontoon about 10 yards from the beach. Nice pubs on the beach and the HM knocks about ten ft off the length of your boat!!

Not the place to go in an onshore storm. But once inside, it's very protected.

Much easier than the Exe and a dam sight nicer.

Yes it is strange although from what I can understand it's the fact that the entrance channel moves that makes it a little risky but small ships go in and out so it can't be that bad. But I think what happened was that somebody wrote in a pilot book about 100yrs ago that the entrance was dangerous and the reputation stuck

The HM has been trying to get the info in the almanac changed. He dredges the enterance on a regular basis with a tug and a sort of snow plough that he drags along.

In good weather the entrance is dead easy and only a short way before your back in deap water in the harbour.

I think it would help also if there was a marina in the harbour but I understand the locals have opposed it. A marina would encourage visitors and maybe change the perception about the entrance

Avoid the Dartmouth Regatta!! Moorings are very difficulat to find and the marinas do not accept visiting boats for this week (and if you're already visiting a marina they'll ask you to leave - happened to me last year) Regatta is brilliant if you can find  somewhere though (Red Arrows and other aircraft right over your head!!). THe RN College is a worthwhile day out, as is the steam train up to Paignton (although Paignton is just horrible).Lots of other places - Salcombe, Fowey, Falmouth all highly recommended Yealm is nice and quiet with a couple of good pubs on the river. We're down that way in July travelling back from the CI via Falmouth and back along to the Solent during the month. If the weather is half decent it will be lovely. If not ......
