PITA new owners

Dear Robin,
What a terrible story!
Sorry to impose but I thought you might have a little more time available now.
I have a friend in America who recently bought a boat and is having problems with the windlass. I think he is near you. Shall I PM you the details and you can take if from there?
:):encouragement:

;););)NOt my guy then 'cos he bought it nearly 5 months ago, closed deal and payment received 28th Sept 2016! Worra cnut.

I have his texts still on my phone but cannot find a way yet to print them off. I am waiting to talk to my old maintenance guys to see what they say as he was using them and probably abusing them too.

I can see why so many Mercans resort to the Colt 45 solution.;)

I think that you mentioned having an Android phone and am certain there will be SMS transfer apps if you search Play Store.

If it helps, I've been using My Phone Explorer for many years now and it works well for no cost and with no advertising. I sync. several email accounts with Outlook along with contacts, notes, calendar tasks and events. It works very well and can also sync. other email programs and calendars. However, it also archives SMS messages, call logs etc. and should allow you to backup, print or copy/paste all the information you want to retain even if you don't need the email bits.

Windows PC version can be downloaded here: http://www.fjsoft.at/en/downloads.php
Search Play Store to install My Phone Explorer client on your android device.

Transfer can be via Wifi, Bluetooth or USB cable. I'm certain you'll find plenty of similar apps if you don't like this one.

Did you demonstrate the windlass working after it was fixed as agreed ?

If so remind him of that and tell him it is now his problem along with all other issues of how to use and keep a boat. At least he has now given you full reason to tell him bluntly to go forth and multiply.

Or was Hurricane Mathew your responsibility too ?

I did not demonstrate nor go check it personally, I forwarded the message from the fixer guys saying it was all working fine after new battery installed and this was Before the final handover and payment transfer. He could if he so wished have gone and checked or paid his surveyor to, but he chose not to. I did look later and see that the slack was out of the chain and the anchor in the bow roller correctly positioned but by then he had all the keys so I could not turn on the batteries or windlass anyway even had I felt so inclined.

so far I have chosen not to contact him again at all, just block him from our phones and emails.

Install Airdroid or Pushbullet on your phone and you can read the texts on your PC Robin. You'll be able to cut and paste the texts into a document or text file or take screenshots. A little bit of a faff but it works.

THanks and to Mistroma et al.. I have located a couple of Apps that display messages on my 'puter but so far thy only allow one at a time to be printed. I will try the copy and paste into a document route , but at least I have the messages backed up and saved should I need proof of moronicity . Oddly, years ago I had a Motorola basic phone with PC software that allowed sending saving and printing easily, now with 'smart' phone and Win10 it is a faff.

Unfortunately for you if you are going to keep his messages then it would need printed out one at a time each one showing date and time.
If you copy and paste them together he can claim that you have edited them.

This bloke is a right Merkin so do not trust him.

good point, noted. Mind you recent ones are all timed at when I turn on next morning as the 'do not disturb' function blocked all until post 6am and then my turning on the phone. I Think I have a compulsory 24hr cool off period before the store will let me have that colt 45.:ambivalence:

Sorry, the copy & paste reference was a bit of a red herring. I just meant to point it out in case you wanted to assemble some notes in a document for your own use, not use it to grab a copy of everything.

It is simple to print out all SMS messages with MyPhoneExplorer one you sync copies to your PC. Just go to the list of SMS messages, select them all and print.

Easiest way is:
1) Click Messages at left side of the window: This displays a message summary list in main part of the application
2) Select the summary list by clicking somewhere in the list and then select all messages by shift-clicking or simply pressing Control-A (select all shortcut).
3) Right-click on the list of selected messages and choose print.

I'd actually print as PDF rather than a paper document as this is more useful and you can always print that file to paper if required. Windows 10 has print to PDF without adding any other software. The PDF will list details of each message (number of sender, time, date etc.) plus full contents of each message.

I think that you can also sort messages by date or as conversations etc. but have not tried that yet.

Thanks, there is no end to the knowledge contained on this forum:encouragement:. I just printed off all 8 pages of his text garbage.Sadly it did not allow me the option my printer usually gives me of printing on both sides of each page but hey what is 4 wasted sheets of paper in the overall scheme of things

Regardless of our antagonist, that app is a very useful one to have. Please take a virtual bow and bottle of wine or whateever!.

Glad to be of help in some small way, thanks for the drink and cheers.

Not certain why you couldn't print double sided as it should just use the normal print drivers. You could try printing to "Microsoft print to PDF" in future instead of your default printer. The output just goes to a PDF file instead of a physical printer. It can obviously be printed later as it is just a standard PDF file. Plenty of free options to do the same thing pre-Windows 10 (e.g. Nitro reader).

Once again thanks, that worked very well and is a very useful. feature to remember. I have printed and saved to .pdf so may publish the whole shenanigans on a local USA forum or distribute amongst the many contractors working at the marina as a warning., That should get me sued by him again.

As he has threatened to sue you DO NOT provide any further help at all as goodwill. He has forgone that entitlement.

In the UK this would be caveat emptor, so he wouldn't stand much if any chance of success. In any event he has bought a secondhand boat, of which a windlass is a small part of the whole deal. You say it worked at the point of sale - he had the opportunity to check this and chose not to do so, and one assumes you did not provide a warranty.

Option 1 - Will he really sue for a full refund for a secondhand accessory he chose not to check was working, therefore you statement it was is perfectly reasonable.

Brazen it out.

Option 2 - at least under EU law you have to give someone the option to repair something before you can seek repairs or other remedies. So perhaps an offer to undertake the necessary repair or supply a new windlass might be a reasonable thing to do, of course subject to your own surveyor (you) going aboard and seeing if he has actually turned the thing on.

I can't see a US Court being that stupid - Judge Judy seems to operate the same way as Judge Rinder !!!
