PITA new owners

Robin, I think you have gone above and beyond the call of duty. When I bought my current boat it was all through the broker, I did ask for contact email/phone for the previous owner but apparently the owner did not want to give them. Not really a problem, just thought it would be nice to let him know how we got on and if there were any unusual issues that I couldn't work out. In that context you have really gone the extra mile and should be commended.

Another weekend another text stream. Now blocked all calls except from selectedallowed contacts between 7pm and 6am daily. Have also allocated a new text notification sound to that 'contact' that says 'you have another f******g text'. I now know he uses voice to text so texting is too damn easy, blasted iPhone. I could do the same on my new android, but there is a risk I might say something untoward that gets sent in error, especially via the car Bluetooth:biggrin-new::biggrin-new:.

For some reason you don't want to block the number of your caller. That is the solution. Not sure why you are reluctant to do so, yet still grumpy about the calls coming through. Your call - literally

Idle curiosity I suppose. I hate to totally block same as blocking a poster on here, where I have just 2 such, not you BTW. An occasional question is one thing. But a constant stream that starts from the minute when they arrive on board for the weekend is another, as by then we have settled down to an evening watching TV.

A problem shared is a problem halved - so come on show us what they are asking ! I for one am intrigued.

tonight's question for a bonus of 10 was 'there are 2 vents in the owner's cabin for the air conditioning, one of which appears to have a fan attached that is not connected, two wires are just hanging, what is this please'. AFIK it was added by the original owner. The new owner had insisted after their survey that we have the baseboard under the aircon unit replaced as it had 'mildew on it'. my guess is that when the aircon unit was removed to fit the new baseboard, the workers did not reconnect the two wires. The fan was an add-on to spread the air around the cabin more, not part of the aircon itself and they have been using the thing as is for nearly 3 months without comment except to say how well it all works at keeping things cool. Anyway no more calls today/tonight and hopefully they will be off home in the morning ( they live 200 miles away)

On 11th Jan you said you'd sold the boat ten weeks ago, another couple of weeks have passed so they've had the boat for 3 months and they're only now asking about a couple of hanging wires?

They're taking the p***, I should cut off all contact as firmly, and if necessary, as rudely as possible!

A few months ago I visited a boat, by invitation, which I sold ten years ago The present owner had a list of questions for me, which I was happy, and quite flattered, to answer. I didn't find him a PITA. What's the difference?

You are going to be in trouble the first time they actually try and sail the boat, I would do a runner now.

I would guess the questions were not of the, what are these two wires, variety.

And that's one set of questions over ten years, not a constant stream. When we bought our current boat just over a year ago we were delighted that the owner agreed drive a 100 miles to meet us on board and talk us through everything. Once that was done we reckoned he'd done enough. Personally I'd block the number, if you aren't prepared to do that you can't really complain any more.

One final comment to hopefully show I'm not the mean old bugger some here seem to think. We were present for the entire 12 hours of their boat survey and sea trial. during which time both us and their surveyor instructed them on and demonstrated the on board systems. I showed how the autopilot was engaged and disengaged and had them deploy and put away the in-mast main and roller genoa. However I had to force him to take the wheel for a short time whilst I put the main away finally as we neared the marina and the narrow shallow channel in. His wife was more knowledgeable and the only one to help as we went in the home berth and tied up. During the day we spent with them he constantly told of his previous boats, both sail and power plus charter trips in the Caribbean they had done. He also said the broker had agreed to be with them for the 'delivery' trip to their home in SW Florida from us in daytona on the east coast. This delivery will be made inside, not offshore, and using the ICW and Okeechobee to cross from east to west. I'm assuming that agreement still applies from the broker but for the first time ever I will not have tears in my eyes as my old boat departs but will let out a large cheer ( at least under my breath).

I said at the start I actually quitelike these folk so do not want to become the evil previous owner. I get the feeling that sometimes the guy is on board alone, wifey stayed at home, and maybe is just bored or is hinting that we go there and chat although he has never asked, everything is asked via text or the occasional email from his home. I'm not a text addict (and am slow at it) so not used to being bombarded by them like modern folks seemingly are.

So that is it, no more from me on this subject.[/GRUMPYOLDGIT]

Offer to do another handover day. At whatever hourly or daily rate you think is appropriate, and say that after the handover all other queries will attract the same rate.

I thought I was done, but just got a text re the aircon/fan question. He has the local experts coming 1st Feb. to sort it. They only charge $100/hour and min 1 hr callout fee, so the local economy is doing very nicely. I haven't answered and probably won't

As a new owner (and my first boat), I have found half the fun in pottering around and working things out for myself. Had to buy a multimeter and learn enough to use it as I found using a hammer didn't work is one example of learning new necessary skills and getting to know the boat inside out.
