I was asked today for immediate treatment advice ( to HMCG on VHF Channel16) about jellyfish stings, from a vessel anchored on the South Coast.

My advice was "Apply vinegar. If vinegar is not available, use urine."
(My fellow watch staff concurred).

This is what you get from HMCG. Practical and useable advice.

It may not be politically correct but.......
What would you advise ?

If in doubt whip it out.

Urine does work to releave the pain and irritation and can be readily availible at short notice.
Who cares about being P.C when pain of a loved will allow you to justifiable P on them.

Got stung by a jelly in Mallorca last year. As I swam back to the boat, Popeye and all 3 male crew were around the swim platform, ready for action. I declined their kind offers, and headed for the vinegar. Took the burn away fairly well. Now have special after bit/sting stuff in my bag at all times.

Altho might want to decant it into a receptacle first rather than point & squirt your todger directly at victim!

Agree it works but this is one of those bits of advice that falls into the category of "who first discovered that and how???!!!".

Like discovering that frogs legs and snails were edible. Either brave or foolish or desperate.

[/ QUOTE ] There are several types of after sting stuff, but I was told by a doctor crew member not to use the anti-histamine cream I had aboard for sting relief. So I chucked it. I can't clearly remember the reason he gave - sensitisation, I think. Anyone know?

Of course.... he probably told you to get rid of it because secretly he was afraid that you would use the cream on him the next time he pretended he had been stung, instead of doing the alternative discussed here! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Can you ? I can't !

I'm in Russia working & she's in Spain on holiday with her sister & nephew. Phone seems to be turned off ! Apart from that mobile calls from Russia coast 1.70 / min and that's to a landline !

Back to the point. Funnily enough, no lies, the other day I get a text from her. The nephew had got stung by jellyfish. Then she jumped up to quick, passed out & had a fit on the beach. Apparently it was hot but she said she had had plenty of water.

It seems the jellyfish stings must have been mild. Don't know if anybody pissed on him though.

Sounds like a great 1st day on holiday !!

It seems urine may not be the best thing for stings

I stood on a spiny sea urchin (apparently it was Diadema antillarum) and the local kids on Grenada tried to convince us that you had to pee on it. Neither my son nor his girlfriend offered to assist. The lead skipper said it didn't do any good anyway, and then said we had to get the spine out. Stop reading if squeemish - the way they do it is to light a match and then burn the area around the spine so that it blisters, and then the skin is soft enough to get a grip on the tip of the spine and pull it out. He removed most of it, but the rest is still there /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Your question got me researching.

Acid is good - neutralises the the stinging cells (vinegar, acetic acid - lemon juice).

Fresh water is bad, causes any remaining stinging cells to fire off. Urine probably comes in this category, by not being acid enough.

In Australian waters, always treat stings very seriously (there's a particularly venomous creature wandering the oceans there).

Also, if your patient shows signs of allergic reaction (restricted breathing, facial rash) treat the event as an emergency.

Oh, and antihistamines applied locally are fine . . .

Excellent reference at: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/jellyfish_stings/article_em.htm

Enjoy the photographs.

Okay you lot..... stop spoiling this thread with facts and science! If some poor needy sod gets their kicks out of peeing on or being peed on, then the last thing they need is you with your scientific research taking away their excuse and making them feel guilty about their strangeness! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No pictures thanks Lakey......... at least not on the forum!
