Pipedream's progress in the Jester Challenge

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Thanks for that.

Looks like he had problems with his self steering, and his sleep. Hopefully we will hear more when he comes back.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Yes thanks for that as well.

Having a sonata its good to know that we can plan on more than just coastal. But might have to wait a couple of years before going overseas as it were.

Good to hear he is nearing home as like yourself, hearing more when he gets back.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Gary,

Apologies, but down on the boat, and don't have the facilities to update the Google Earth map on the boats laptop.... will catch up with all Alan's updates and complete the picture on Sunday evening...

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

That's simply not good enough Neil. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

We need a daily update on Alan's progress both lat and longy and pictorially. How can we possibly wait until Sunday evening? Go home at once and sort it out! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

OK, I admit it. I'm outta sorts due to the non arrival of my windows and wanna pick a fight with someone. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Slightly smaller scale so you can see where the destination is!

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Hello all. I have just registered on this site as Alan (Pipedream) is a member of the Twickenham Operatic Society (TOpS) and has a number of sponsors for his charity.

I have put a page on the TOPS website that also includes my rather clumsy placement of his progress reports on Google Earth.

This link will take you there.

Keep up the great work Alan - all at TOPS wish you well.

Colin & Gill

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Well done. I asked Alan about his upcoming theatrical performance and he said he was cast as the drunk. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No type-casting going on there then /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Alan is actually one of the Bow Street Runners but I guess that your comment is entirely appropriate !! Just hope that he is back in time for rehearsals.

Colin.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Alan's 7th report below: Talked to him earlier today - sound like he's enjoying it a bit more now & passes on thanks & hellos to all. - Gary

070608 1400 44D EG01N 14DEG11.2W 662NM TO GO. V SLOW PROGRESS AGAINST 7KT FROM SW. ALL WELL ON BOARD. I EVEN HAD A WASH TODAY.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Thank goodness for that - it was getting pongy from here! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ah well 65nm nearer to finish is OK- nearly half way - I don't know how the rowers cope with days when they go backwards /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Looks like better winds might be coming.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Alan's 8th report below: - a good day, - he should wash more often!

080608 1400 43DEG05.9N 16DEG14.4W 557NM TO GO.105NM IN 24HRS BEST YET. PASSED HALF WAY 0520. WIND AND WEATHER MUCH KINDER. ALL WELL.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Let's not talk sailing personal hygiene /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I couldn't possibly comment /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also make that 105nm VMG in the last 24 hours - must be something in this electrickery GPS stuff! . Being nearer to the finish than home must be a real boost. Goodun.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

I can only say as a mobo that this is truly amazing.
the way the reports come in each day and watching the progress is outstanding.

I for one have checked in everyday (even from the xda) to see how this adventure is going.

and yet again the forum says it all.

Passed half way must be a real booster...
Well done Alan

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Alan's 9th report below. - Gary
Seems to be going well.
For my (very) limited sailing knowledge what does "Goosewing" mean?

090608 1400 42DEG15.6N 18DEG20.2W 452NM TO GO. WIND DIRECTLY ON STERN TOO FEISTY AND WOBBLY TO GOOSEWING. GREAT SAILING THO. ALL WELL.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Goosewing means to sail with the wind right behind you so that you can have the foresail (jib/genoa) out to one side of the boat and the mainsail out to the other. Like wings! Means you have the maximum sail area catching the wind. Works best in fairly flat water and with a steady breeze.

Another 105nm - excellent news!

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Alan's stature as a local hero rightly grows daily on this forum.

Who would have anticipated such a range of skills being demonstrated by man who only 12 months ago was incapable of judging the correct period to cook sauages and chicken on a barbeque to within 300%.

Perhaps be could be persuaded to give a talk about the whole adventure on his return - with his sense of humour and natural tendency to self-deprecation it would make for a very amusing and entertaining evening.

I'm a bit worried by the kink in his progress between report #6 and #7. perhaps he lost concentration for a day, or put something metallic down close to the compass? I suppose it could've been the SW wind.

Re: Pipedream\'s progress in the Jester Challenge

Having crewed for me on the trip to/from Ostend recently, it comes as no surprise to me that Alan 'lost concentration'. The sleep deprivation he experienced on a long weekend N Sea crossing would be as nothing compared with the trip to the Azores. He'll be sailing with the windvane and the windvane will follow the wind. If the wind changes while Alan is having a snooze, he'll quickly be off course. If he's too tired to realise that straight away, or the wind won't let him sail any closer to the desired course.....

Don't think there's any reason to be worried about a kink in the course. It's to be expected, from time to time, surely?
