...and nobody has yet mentioned the Victory40....Voted number 33 in YM`s top 100 yachts of all time... Strong, fast (for a boat of its type) versatile and enduring ....and now generally extremely good value for money..when you can find them for sale (owners tend to hang on to them for a very long time) www.victory40.co.uk

I remember reading a report on Birvidik the first one. What struck me was IIRC that it carried two tons of fuel. It also had a roof which covered the cockpit as is now proposed by the Vilm 117 (see my earlier post).

I'm sure Northshore would be happy to build you one of these.

2 genres

A topic close to my heart! There really should be 2 genres - most "true" deck saloons used to be designed with a large superstructure above the deck, to give good external visibility whilst sitting down within - whether to helm from or just to admire the view. Traditionally the alternative used to be the safe but isolated/gloomy underground/submarine style saloon we all know well.

The DS' 2 downsides were a) the superstructure blocked the view from an aft cockpit helm (think moody 45ds & most catamarans) and b) the need for side decks meant that the standing headroom living accommodation was considerably narrower than in an equivalent non-deck saloon yacht, which made the 35'-43' range seem cramped This is one reason they haven't dominated the yacht market.

Jeanneau have dropped their true DS 40/43, and replaced with 40/42/44/45/50/54 "ds"s which don't have the raised cabin sole & raised superstructure, but with clever design & modern technology, they have fitted enough glazing in the hull sides & cabin top to successfully recreate the light & airy aspect, and enough notable sales success for beneteau, bavaria & others to take note & copy. Bearing in mind that for many, the yacht fulfils the function of weekend cottage/holiday home, and for those who spend as much or more time down below whether sailing or at anchor in our chilly climate, having a light & airy daytime refuge has great appeal.

There's a great minor revolution taking place at last in the yacht industry - enough of the yacht-buying public have shown that they will consider "revolutionary" designs, and that, coupled with the general public's greater interest in general housing interior design & lifestyle, has led to the Beneteau Sense range & others in the pipeline.

As a prospective liveaboard long distance cruiser, I was contemplating a 38'-40' cat, but am delighted now to have a choice of comfortable, airy 45' monohulls. Bring it on...!

moody 45

I know it well ken, the 45's great but flawed - the saloon/galley is tiny, the helm vision forwards badly restricted but hats off to Dixon for such a novel design, and to Hanse for a great development & build. v £££££ too! on paper I thought it would be my dream, but in reality, I'd have a 2008 model jeanneau 45ds or the new sense 50 like a shot - possibly even the new bene Oceanis45.

This is always a difficult question but i guess you need to ask yourself what type of sailing you want to do. Sailing around the UK or med based then i would definitely recommend the cheaper more volume based production boats, there are plenty to chose from.

Should you wish to do more long distance cruising you really need a boat with a bit more meat. That lists consists of the boats already mentioned in your first e-mail. I have sailed on many older Contests, Oysters, HR and these are all solid and go anywhere boats. might be difficult to find one in your budget however i suspect they will hold their value against the lighter/newer displacement boats.

Good luck with your search.
