Can anyone suggest any other brands. So far I know of:

Moody
Nauticat
Wauquiez
Contest
Southerly
Oyster
Island Packet
Delphia (The only seemingly value builder, and their 46cc DS is about 50% more than their 47)

Does anyone make a production deck saloon/pilot house. All the ones above are lovely, but Christ they are expensive. Most achievable so far seems to be a mid-late 90's Wauquiez 48 for about £150k

Thre is a whole string of Jeanneau DS's from 40 to 54 and earlier generation 40 and 43 DS's.

Not well known but there is also the Bavaria 47 Ocean which is a deck saloon but only about 15 to 20 were made. (I have one). There was also a Bavaria 51 Ocean of a similar style although I have never seen one in the flesh.

Cheers,

Bob

The later jeanneau ds boats aren't proper deck saloons though - you can't navigate the vessel from them. Ditto for the legend afaik.

The early 40/43 is spot on.

I like the ocean 47 - 3 for sale and looks a quality boat. A CC would be the other preferred option

Interesting - I would never have expected to navigate a DS from below - that's a Pilot House as far as I was concerned. I just regarded DS as meaning lots of headroom and very large windows...

I would have to add the Sirius 31DS or 35DS, wouldn't I?

But they are pretty expensive. Within fairly wide constraints you can have a vast range of options, so that they are almost custom-made. There are only about half a dozen in the UK and a couple of others in Ireland.

Hi, First mate and I fancied a DS yacht after trying a Southerly which was unfortunatly too rich for us. We have a long keeled boat with a large cockpit which meets all our requirements bar being able to see the world going by as we relax on board. After long and considered thought we have just commissioned a full cockpit enclosure, with plenty of clear panels. This will allow us to relax in the cockpit at a much higher level than in the salon. If it is cold and we have shorepower a small fan heater will be sufficient to take the chill off. After this years mid summer poor weather it should be a fair compromise without requireing a boat change. We hope so!

Didn't Sadler do one on their renowned Starlight 39 hull? Remember now the Panorama
Sovereign 40

All very low volume production but could be worth a look if find one!

Gone down the same road. So far up to expectations.

4 pages of replies.....

...and nobody has yet mentioned the Victory40....Voted number 33 in YM`s top 100 yachts of all time... Strong, fast (for a boat of its type) versatile and enduring ....and now generally extremely good value for money..when you can find them for sale (owners tend to hang on to them for a very long time) www.victory40.co.uk

I agree thats why I immediately bought one when I heard they were going to stop making them.

You can only sail them from below with a remote autohelm though.

I do wish people would put ex charter boats in perspective. They are often better equiped, regularly used and better maintained. I have sold 2 with no problems.

After looking at my 43DS one of this parish looked high and low for one with a stackpack rather than in mast furling and finally bought a lightly used one but he has had some problems due to is light use!!

I look forward to the day when I take mine out of charter as it will mean I have the spare time to use it properly myself and I will have no hesitation in retaining the boat for my personal use and I would not wish to swap it for a privately owned one unless I was certain of regular usage and maintenance.

Over the years I have met many owners of charter boats who have remarked that the charter boats were in better condition than previous boats that they had privately owned but used very little.

Addition - I would swap it for a Southerly 43 though but doubt whether I could justify the extra cost!!
