Physical exercises

How many of you do some kind of physical exercises to keep in (some kind) of shape to help you during sailing trips. I mean, being agile on a boat helps in making it more fun and is even safer. What do you think?

Gym for days a week, swim 6 nights a week, cycle to the pub and back in the summer, plus plenty of hard graft on customers boats. Pretty hard hard work keeping all this going but it is worth it.
 
Exercise!?

Who the hell needs exercise! I usually reckon to lose half a stone per week on board when passagemaking.

As a rule I go to the gym a couple of time a week but it's not nearly as effective as working a boat hard and enduring my own cooking!

But the old legs do get a bit feeble and the knees really give me gyp by the end.
 
Blimey Stephen, you must be fit!

I find chucking large lumps of canvas and steel around during the working day, crazy dancing a couple of times a week, sex, gardening, biking and DIY for daughters and myself keeps me in shape.

Good food also helps.

I am not that fit, which is why I am going to the gym so much, I had a nasty ankle injury last summer which meant that I havent been able to do half the things I enjoy like long distance walking etc. But I do feel a lot fitter now
 
Dont want to worry you guys.
I thought I was fit being an electrician and plumber running up and down stairs, steps, ladders all day, renovating my boat, cycling 3 times a week, I'm a non smoker, not overweight, heathy diet, not heavy drinker, normal Choelesterol. Doc said my chest pains were indegestion, took my blood pressure and said, "nothing wrong with your heart". Three weeks later I had a heart attack. that was two years ago, had triple bypass operation last year. Slowly getting my life back together. The symptoms of a heart attack are not those protrayed on TV etc, mine were aching in shoulders, arms feeling heavy, slowly changing to dull ache in centre of chest, some people have aching jaw. Dont rely on your GP just taking your blood pressure ask for ECG

Gave up on the gym years ago, something to do with all those great bodies, and feeling out of place, also found I hated the bike exercises.

Now I walk a lot, and use my bike, seems so much more reasonable to pedal if you are moving somewhere!

Read somewhere what great exercise it is just being on the boat, all that movement using all the different muscle groups.

Appreciate being fit is good, but surely only essentaia for the formula one types, not the sunday drivers.
 
Hi Arno

Was out in my Laser again at the weekend there. Amazed at what a great workout you get! Especially the tummy muscles. Even had a nice swim after the boat when I dissapeared over backwards. Got home exhausted but very happy.

My father was turned down for National Service because the doc said his heart sounded wrong. Civilian doctors couldn't find anything wrong but 45 years later he died of a heart attack. Clever these army doctors.

Ive been thinking about it all year!
But walking is good for you,and these days its far to easy to sit around,and not get out!

Very depressing post this one! sort of thing one tries not to think about.

JJ, I'm seriously impressed. I reckon I put on about the same amount when passagemaking, but then my better half does the cooking.....and most of the sail handling, come to think of it.
 
Always trained since I was a child. Once you create the habit you never get out out of it. I train in the gym 4 times a week and run regularly since packing up rugby when I was 40 (11 years ago)
Enjoy working on the boat when sailing but feel the need to do more arobic exercise when ashore.
I also think that if you have trained you can say to yourself that having a drink at the end of the day is a good reward.

I agree ashanta, I can't imagine not exercising for at least an hour most days. It becomes part of the rythym of life and I feel odd if I don't exercise.
 
Personally

I rise at 05.30 do 50 push ups, 50 sit ups and 50 squat jumps

After breakfast I do a 12 mile run and finish with a 1 mile swim.

Early evening I spend 2 hours in Gym and jog 4 miles home.

The day finishes with 2 hours weight training.

I find this is the only technique that enables me to sail a 20 ft boat in F12 conditions

I believe that it was Winston Churchill who said that the only exercise he took was from walking up hospital steps to visit his friends who had injured themselves whilst exercising.

Jim Fixx, he of inventing jogging fame, died at 50ish of heart attack arteries clogged with cholesterol, Atkins of diet fame dead at 70ish fat as butter, Winston, he of cigar smoking and relaxed as a newt fame, popped his clogs at 93. I know which philosophy I follow.
