I have read somewhere (admittedly on a US forum) that spares for older Perkins engines are very difficult to come by and this makes these engines difficult to maintain... is this true?
There were literally millons of these engines made, fitted into everything from Dodge trucks to combine harvesters, tractors, fairground generators, etc etc...
even boats. They had several versions of the engine, turbo, normally aspirated, low line, horizontal mounting etc etc. Perkins did their own marinisation, and produced the complete Marine engine, which was a rarity in those days, and made them a popular choice.
For standard engine parts there is no problem, these are available via Diperk, Perkins new direct spares arm.
The difficulty comes when you need specialised marinisation bits, like water cooled manifolds, exhaust elbows, adaptors etc.
Whilst these bits are available if you know where to look they are a bit on the expensive side, due to more or less bespoke production.
I recently bought two Exhaust Outlet elbows and some gaskets and other stuff from them...cost £1600, of which at least £350 was Vat and import duty.
There are often spare 6354's sold on Ebay.
I picked up a couple of engines locally last year and stripped anything useful off them.
There are plenty of spares and spare engines available so dont let Perkins Engines put you off..indeed I would think it would be a positive thing. They reputedly run for ever and ever, as they are extremely low revving at about 2300 max.
There were lot of problems at the end of last year when the Perkins Parent Group (Finning) took back direct control of Parts Distribution from The Hindle Group.
This left a lot of Hindle Group dealers/Perkins Powerpart retailers out in the cold.
It all appears to be sorted now and parts can be got direct from Diperk and from their newly appointed dealer network.
