Would I be correct in thinking that imperial spanner/socket sizes are what I should buy for a 30 year old British built boat with a Perkins 4108?

I also need to start disconnecting the shaft as a first stage in the replacement of a stern bearing.

I still use my witworth .
Last summer when some of my tools got nicked I was left with out my 1/2"" drive ratchet any way I brought a cheap set from Argos thinking at some point to find some one selling second hand high quality to re place mine.
Guess what the JCB socket set is in my opinion very good quality and cheaper than buying an average ratchet.
I have just rebuilt my 110 landrover converting it to the 300tdi and rs380 box none of the sockets broke the ratchet is still good and I've given em a lot of stick. I've broken, Snap-On, britool, facom, etc, so it says a lot for this set in fact I'm going to buy a spare for when I wear it out.
So go to Argos get their reasonable stuff ( not the cheapest ) and you wont be disappointed.
cheers

smile you'l be on your boat soon ;-)

Perkins of this period will be inch a/f stuff, all UNC & UNF.
My trusty Draper set has done well including a fair bit of semi-pro work, but as the sockets are getting lost and worn I am replacing individual ones with Halfords Pro range. Their set is good value and very good quality, came top in a test a little while ago. The other set that gets a lot of use is a set of AIr-Sockets from Screwfix which are flank drive and they fit Metric & Inch sizes and drive on the flats not on the points, so much less chance of rounding hex's off.

For the engine block itself American Fine will do but some of the marinising bolt-ons will vary. Early Jabsco raw water pumps, for instance are Whitworth. Luckily I had a few of the larger size open-enders in an old hoard of tools... you know, the ones you don't throw away 'cos they might come in useful some day.

I bought a Halfords socket set 15 years or so back. Over the years a few sockets got split and so I went back and asked then to honor their "life time warrenty" and they did!!
Replaced all the damaged socked ( only 3 or 4)... Very impressed.

Thank you for the advice. I can find star sockets at Screwfix or did you actually mean air-scokets?

if its 30 year old AF spanners will be needed. AF stands for across flats so if you measure the bolt heads across the flats you should end up with an inch measurement.
american fine and american coarse stands for the pitch of the threads.

Yes I did mean Air sockets, they are designed for use in compressed air drivers so are fairly heavy duty. Find it with the compressed air tools.
MIne was around £ 30 and goes up to around 30mm, bit thick wall for some jobs but strong and cheap for what you get. Mines getting a lot of use.

Re: Air sockets

Thank you for the clarification, they sound a bit too exotic for a one-time engine rebuild project in my garage at home. I never touch car engines these days.

Re: Follow up

In the end I purchased a large socket set from the Halfords pro range, happy so far. There are oodles more sizes than I need but I think over the years I will eliminate many interrupted jobs and shopping trips for extra socket sizes.

The clip in plastic organiser saves time as well and by the time this breaks up I will probably know which subset are needed for regular maintenance aboard.

So far mm sockets have fitted ancillary components on this 30 year old yacht but I expect to find a role for the A/F sockets during the engine rebuild.
