Perkins 4108 Manual & Oil type

Dependent on ambient temperatur the workshop manual recommends anything between 10W and 20W50. I've always taken that to mean just about any reasonable quality oil. I've used "standard" multigrade for around 10 years now with no obvious problems.

I know its wrong ... but old habits die hard ... (scrooge !)

I use cheapest non-turbo Diesel grade sae30 that I can get .... usually from car acc's shop. (Note that cheap oil is often reprocessed .... ) Still works in my old bus engine !!

Re: Perkins 4108 Manual & Oil type

If you are local to Gosport I have a 4107/8 Manual which you could photocopy.
20/50 should be fine.
I have very recently changed the oil on my 4108, not using the brass pump on the side of the engine, but using a vacuum based "Pela" oil extractor, which pulls the oil up via the dipstick. Having left the oil overnight, I took the container to the tip, and on pouring it out found a lot of sludge which clearly the brass sidearm pump had not accessed, but the Pela pump had...
As the engine is 28 years old, it will be having another oil change soon, and the replacement will be flushing oil to get rid of the rest of the sludge.
Oil pressure is still 60 psi at 1000 rpm
