Re' BigArts post earlier today...got me thinking about my own ex-engine. It was 36 yrs old when I bought the boat last year, it looked like a heap of scrap but was actually working perfectly. The only reason I decided to re-engine was that I plan on spending hopefully 10-15 years living aboard & long-distance cruising so wasn't willing to entrust my safety to anything 36 yrs old, even if it DID work.
My yard currently re-furbishing her didn't volunteer any trade-in price for it even though they knew it was a good engine, but my question is...as I bought the new Volvo D2-40 through them, & their price was £1000 more than I could have got it for, (£6K+ versus my £5k+) should I be expecting some sort of offer from them.? They are a pretty mercenery lot though so I'm not really expecting anything.!
If they can go for 2,500 Euros re-fettled, do I have any bargaining power with my old engine.?

Jeff, I wish I had been in touch before, I had a P6 in my last boat, raw water cooled! it was older than even me, when I sold the boat, it was 58 yrs old !!!!!, Never ever failed to start, I had the boat, Roberts 44 for 6yrs, I built it. You should certainly go for a trade in, or keep the Perkins and sell it yourself, it will sell. Of course they will need paying if they are fitting the new engine?. Personally I would have had the Perkins seriously serviced, I have a Nic 32 Mk X1 with the original Watamota 28hp, it is treated/spoiled well and (touch wood) runs well, the old 6cyl P6 was a great great engine. Good Luck With the New One. Bill.

Thanks for the comments fellas...'Boats & Outboards'... good idea.!
FiaTira, yes well I've already had to pay them for that & the new Volvo is already in-situ. I do sometimes regret the expense, thinking it would have been quite satisfying to breathe new life into an old engine, but when I thought of some of the conditions I might have to go thru to get over to Cape Town, I thought 'to-hell-with-the-expense'.!
Anybody got any idea what the old 4108 might be worth, as-is.?

Come to think of it, anything to watch out for with the new Volvo D2-40.?
I'm sure I saw a comment not too long ago that the engine-mounts are a bit suspect & prone to cracking...? or something like that.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice or comments on the new Volvo, & what to watch out for, if anyone here has one.
Jeff

Had twin Perkins 4108 diesels in my last boat and they were 30 yars old and ran like a morris minor, never let me down, always got spares and did under a gallon per/hr each at 6 knots.
Agree with other post I would have had yours re built.
As for re-sale, there must be 100's out there, take it to a boat jumble and sell it, someone will have it for sure.
Wait till you want to buy Volvo spares!
