Peoloponnese round trip

So unless you own a motor cruiser, a fast yacht, or want a sailing challenge just to get round, I would seriously suggest allowing at least 4 weeks. We started in Preveza and ended at Nidri. Allow extra from Corfu.
I agree. And if you want to enjoy the trip and explore the places in more depth, allow six weeks. Two weeks can easily be filled just moving from the Inland Ionian (or Messalonghi) to Kalamata. Two more going to Porto Heli (via Navplion). Two more pottering the Saronic. And ten days back through the gulfs (if you do the incredible Diakofti railway gorge)

I will be producing a detailed guide of all the things to do en route for a Cruising Association rally, likely to take place in early season 2012. If there's enough demand, I could print this up for general sale - though it might be cheaper to join CA!

Many thanks for all these replies - keep them coming ! We have found Messolonghi good value although as they continue to improve I guess prices will rise - prices and info. on their web site -: http://www.messolonghimarina.com

They have not yet published their prices for this year, but these were their indicative prices for this year from Jo.

Indicative for a 12m boat:- daily €26.24; Month €225, low season & on land; €363 high season. Annual €2938; €2700 on hard. Lift in & out €470 All prices adjusted to include VAT @ 23% discounts <20% for advance payments.

They have gone up substantially since last year's extreme good value prices.

Our quote for 2011, receieved by email for 37ft was €2625 incl 23% VAT for 12 months, incl lift in/out/pressure wash, water and leccy extra.

I was always amused that they would give you a Vat invoice, and then were quite insistent that you pay by cash! Sounds like they gave you an early payment discount?

I am going from Sicily to Marmaris next month via the S.Peloponeese. Does any know of any reliable places for fuel this time of year? Thanks.

I think that has more to do with Jo's natural Netherlands' meanness, than with attempts to evade VAT. Greek banks charge lots for credit-card transactions.

I've set up a direct arrangement (not using one of the piratical UK Banks) which transfers at near-mid-market rates direct to their bank and, I know, they'd welcome such payments.

There's slightly less problem with credit-card fraud than with debit-card payments.

Places I've seen fuel trucks, on your probable route:-

Pilos, Kalamata (the BP station is closed), Zante, Ithaki and Chania (Crete).

Methinks Jim, having retired ashore ;-) is a little out-of-date as well as heavily Kalamata-biassed.

All seen in April or May, so not necessarily high season.

I have posted this elsewhere but just in case anyone is interested.

"medmarinas" who own a marina in Kalamata, don't know if there is more than one, confirm the fuel station AS CLOSED. But they can arrange a tanker. www.medmarinas.com

In Pylos there are 2 tankers that will deliver all year round. I have spoken to them both to confirm.

Hope that helps someone.

Crotone, south coast of Italy. We had our credit card ripped off at the fuel station there, so make sure you pay cash.
Crotone probably takes the prize for the most undesirable city in Italy. No wonder Managani and Gaetano to mention recent Italians and Socrates to mention classical Greeks, couldn't wait to get out of it.

A local reckoned it had the most tasteless, mean and philistine city council, controlled by the N'Dragha....

I once overwintered the boat at leCastella and sometimes went into the city. It was, once, a rival to Siracusa and Athens in Magna Graecia for the leadership of Hellas - what a dump now.

Cheeky sod! I still charter, borrow boats, and pinch lifts. And I'm more Pylos biased than Kalamata biased.

Seriously though, are you telling me the Kalamata fuel station on the marina is closed all year? Or just pre-Easter?
Yes, defininitely as from December 2009. I was warned it was closing when I filled up there at the end of October, that year.

Are you joining the CA rally (by land) Kissiparissa or Pilos?

One, of course, should not mock the afflicted!!!

Hi!

In two weeks time I am sailing back to Greece from my base in Croatia.
I am thinking to round up the Peloponnesos.

As I have read, some of you prefer the anti-clockwise way.
My info is that this is better to sail the NW way on the E-side (going downwind).
It also very common that at the South (Kythira) the NW changes (turns) upwards... How about that? Is it true?

I guess it is a struggle going from Kythira to Corinth in Meltemi but it can be that it is not so strong..

Any ideas, experiences?

Thanks!
