Penta outboard

You won't find spares other than a few bits and pieces that come up on ebay from time to time.

If it's an air cooled single cylinder engine it's probably the same that was badged as Crescent, Archimedes Penta, and Volvo Penta 39 at various times in the 1970s.

If so I have what is basically the same engine dressed up a bit, badged VP51. and somehow uprated to 5 hp.

I got fed up with it and stopped using it about 24 years ago although it does still run and did a spell for a friend a few years ago.

I have the owners manual which covers the VP39 so if there is anything specific you need to know ask. I've already copied it once and could do the same again I suppose.

The fuel should not be that high. The float is stuck or has sunk or the needle valve is stuck has some muck in it or is just knackered.

Off hand I do not remember for sure if there is a gasket or an O ring at the top of the float chamber or even nothing at all.

It looks as though there is a joint washer of some sort in there. not an O ring anyway.

Thanks for the link to Bill Higham Marine Could be useful if i ever want to use the old VP51 again.
Should really have flogged it not kept it. Might stick it on ebay one day. One went recently for more than i paid new back in 78!

Much better place for outboard help than MarineEngine.com is the iboats forums

The manual for the VP 39 and VP51 is in my photobucket account at http://s50.photobucket.com/user/Vic43/library/V Penta 39 51?sort=3&page=1

It's there in English and one other language

Hi, I'm sorry to drag up an old thread, but i recently got my hands on a Crescent 4Hk/hp. I managed to track down the manual online but the carb has been played with. she runs along nicely but then above mid throttle she started to die off to idle. no amount of throttle up or down made a difference. i did notice a leak from above the carb bowl. when it would die back to idle, if i put it in idleish position it would keep going, if i gave it chock she might give me a blast of power but then want to die so i'd close choke again and it would stay lit. i originally was thinking fuel starvation but when i pulled the plug it was wet and black, like too rich, nothing crusty, easily cleaned and it looked pretty new, no pitting or wear. looking at the carb its a BING 8/115/126 i found the float needle had been broken and somebody had inserted a domestic screw into the float where the pin normally sits to activate the upper half of the original pin. obviously this adds weight. pretty good mcguiver idea to get you out of jail but not when you sell a unit! so sorry for the rant but i have had major problems finding info on this carb on line or parts. so i have a few questions. can someone who might have one tell me the length and diameter of the float needle so i might find a close replacement. also i believe the air mix screw should be set to 1 turn open from closed +-1/2 turn.as for the main jet, should it be turned fully home or does that also have a setting? and what is the float level? i have set it up that when it shuts off if i remove the bowl shes about 3/4 full, this is based on other BING carb data. it seems to run ok with the odd splutter at idle but any data would be great. thanks for taking the time to read this, the big issue really is replacing the float and fuel shutoff needle. thanks Rory
