I'm going to finally replace my head gasket on my Volvo Penta 2002 to hopefully help with the compression and subsequent starting of said 'Beastie'!

Whilst I'm at it does anyone have any advice at what else I should look at.

Many Thanks

Have you checked the gearbox driveshaft spline for wear? There is a detailed explanation on the Westerly Owners web site, www.westerly-owners.co.uk, under "Tech-Pics". I took my gearbox off last Saturday, sure enough the wear was there and it is now with DB Marine at Cookham to be fixed, cost £290 plus VAT. The first picture on the website could have been my driveshaft! Good luck this is nothing to do with the head but well worth looking at while the engine is out of commission.

I did the same job on my 2002 last winter. The gasket was OK but you still have to replace it once the head has been off. The lack of compression was due to pitted exhaust valve seats. There is an excellent engineering firm called "Cylinder Head Engineering" in Fareham who refurbished and tested the valves and re-faced the head for about £70. Cold starting was much improved. If it is fresh water cooled you will have to replace lots of the seals on that maze of copper pipes. Also pull the injectors before you take the head off or you will damage them when you put the head down. I could lend you an injector puller if you don't have one; just for the joy of depriving Volvo Penta of the price of a new one.

Yes several things:-

If it's an early series engine (check with Volvo the serial nos of affected engines) confirm there is no fretting on the gearbox drive shaft, Then:

1. Regrind valves until they hold paraffin overnight. Check head for straightness and if necessary have it milled.
2. Have the injectors bench tested and re-set.
3. replace the thermostat in the head and check/replacethe temperature transmitter
4. Replace valve-guide seals
5. Replace raw-water pump impellor and clear the exhaust elbow of salt/scale build-up.
6. Polish the piston heads after getting off the carbon
7. Check for bore wear.
8. Replace fuel filter element, check and clean breather, replace air-filter, set cold valve rocker clearances.
9. After re-assembly, run up to operating temperature and change engine oil and oil filter.
