I need to reformat the hard drive on my PC.

I've backed up all the data. Tried running "format c:" from windows but it tells me that the drive is in use (not surprisingly). Next I created a DOS start up disk. Having booted into DOS I can't remember the command to change directory to the C drive. Anyone remember?

Also....

1) Do I need to install the CD rom drivers so that when the drive has been formated the CD will still work so that I can reinstall wndows?
2) What's the best (i.e. cheapest) anti-virus software?

Ta, Pete

As to the anti-virus software.

I use AVG. this is free to personal users and there are reguler up-dates avalable for the Virus Datebase.

Get it from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php>http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php</A>

Hope it's not too late but you need to make an emergency start up disk within windows. You need to do this to enable you to load the CD drivers after you have formatted your hard disk. The disk will allow you to boot to dos using a floppy and will load the cd drivers for you.

Once you hve created the disk reboot your PC and after you hear two beeps after the memory count push F8 this will allow you to boot to dos allowing you to format the disk. From here you could also select " boot to dos loading cd drivers" allowing you to format the disk and as long as you dont reboot after the format the cd drivers will still be loaded.

This is of course my opinion and I'm not recommending you do any of this .
