Re: Voyage Planning is Basic Common Sense

Having read the entire thread I must say that I can't see what all the fuss is about!
To make an adequate passage plan for short hops in familiar waters (say the solent) is so simple and requires little time. Indeed, most of us have some sort of passage plan which we keep in our heads.
Most almanacs give a check list on what should be in a basic passage plan and most people will have the sense to check the state of the tide. Simply noting down the relevant information on a piece of paper should be adequate.
Trev...to say that passage plans are only for vessels with watchkeepers on is simply wrong! In fact if you are single handed then it is probably more important because if things go wrong you have less opportunity to start reading almanacs, pilot books and studying charts.
On a short passage in a fast boat (say hamble to cowes) it may be sufficient to simply have a piece of paper with the buoys and coures between them marked out.
That in itself is a passage plan.

the principle of your summary is the key element to the opinions being put forward - I (and I think Haydn) am of the view that (1) the existence of the SOLAS regulations is going to get someone somewhere into a court following an incedent and (2), as you state twice, putting the basics on a bit of paper is no big deal and something that you could produce to evidence that you had fulfulled your legal obligation to plan rather than saying 'trust me I planned' - especially as you are likely to have to accept that you got it wrong 'cos thats why you are there!
My first post was exactly the same as yours I believe - not look where it's got us.................../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Sort of agree. It will get some one into court. But my Solicitor has always told me (He is a Friend) Never write anything down. Thing is. If you write something down. Then some one will ask you for it. Spend weeks with clever lawyer perusing over it and pull it all to bits. If nothing written down. They can produce no evidece to beat you with and have to think on there feet. So when they've finished spouting. You just stand up in defence and say. Swerved to miss dolfin and hit the rock!!!!.........../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
