While on the subject of heads (see "Bulb Changing") the "walls and ceiling" of the compartment on our Hunter Delta are unlined and the GRP hull and bulkheads appear to have been simply painted with what looks like a matt emulsion paint. It seems to be fairly tough and although there is no sign of flaking the surface is crazed in places and generally looks scruffy. I have in the past scrubbed it down with Flash with reasonable effect but the time has now come for a proper "redecoration". I obviously want the new paint to be compatible and withstand the inevitable condensation. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may have been originally used and what should I now use to repaint it? Thanks.

The heads on my boat was lined with vinyl, which was scruffy, cold and
suffered from condensation, use to make me jump feet if your bum or other
parts of your anatomy touched it in the middle of the night!!!
solution was to replace it with a lightweight carpet material, held in place with contact adhesive, This was done three years ago and is still as good
as the day it was put up, And no condensation.
all the best whatever route you take.

There are a few methods you can use, but apply a small amount of paint on the area to make sure it takes ie dose not bubble or flake. 1. to degrease and clean first use sugar soap. 2. you can paint with either vehicle coach paint or a good quality commercial egg shell paint both are oil base so adhesion and durability are good apply with small foam roller for best results and use a small quality paint brush for corners etc. Or you could go for cladding, one good type and easy to use is pvc cladding white (FR) the type used for commercial kitchens. it can be cut with a knife, jigsaw etc it comes with jointing strips, corners etc, fix with a product called Sta-Put spray ver easy to use you can get a very professional easy wipe clean finish

Carpet lined heads! What an awful idea!

As someone who viewed countless yachts for sale last year I think fluffy lining of any form in any location on a yacht is a bad idea.

> good quality commercial egg shell paint

Would you be prepared to name a brand?

Farrow & Ball is the most expensive paint at my local B&Q but I think their high prices are due to the carefully researched colours.

Hi Happy New Year! McPhearson Paints Trade Range we have used it for over 20 years, internal & external, It’s a heavy paint best to build up coats it will fill in crazing they also make a product called Portaflek, this is a multicoloured fleck paint which is
sprayed on, you would have seen it in WC’s but it comes in a variety of colours an can be used anywhere, great coverage textured finish but needs a final sealing coat in heavy wear areas! we have had some stunning results in retail areas of fashion shops, this is a expensive way! you need portabond primer, paint and sealer, gun cleaner, they only come in 5ltrs then you would have to hire the special spray gear! but it’s worth the professional finish.

Wishbone. God I’m thinking of work already!!!

Please forgive me
for my suggestion concerning the carpet lining,
If I knew this would offend your obviously good taste, I would
never had suggested it,

And don't get me started on carpets in domestic bathrooms. I wonder if New Labour has an open position for Minister of Style Enforcement?

Just think I could ban flashing Christmas tree lights, oversized sprayhoods and pale green topsides.

Re: hunter?

The Hunter Delta 25 is British. It was made up to the mid eighties and is a rather more racy forerunner to the Horizon 26/27. (Claymore also used to have one before going soft and buying a motorsailer!) Most were built with lifting keels but our's has twin fins and like most Hunter twins performs very well, (Starting to sound like an advert but no plans to sell as yet - unless, that is, a very good offer is received!!) As you say, Hunter UK are very good with after-sales advice but in common with many Hunters our's was home completed so it's anyone's guess as to what paint was used.

Thanks for all the other comments and suggestions but while I appreciate Mike27's cold bum problems I think I'll steer clear of carpet. The extra thickness would reduce the already compact dimensions of the heads! (Proves I'm not advertising).

Thanks, Wishbone, for the info on Portaflek paint - I always wondered what the flecks were on public WC walls!
