My rudder is in a bit of a state, i'm going to remove whats left of the paint and smarten it up. Any thoughts on good paint for a steel rudder, its a trailer sailer so most of the time out of the water. Anything generally available would be good as i'm a long way from the sea or any boaty shops

Proper job would be power wire brush to shiny, several coats of Jotamastic primer, then Hardtop topcoat. For a trailer-sailer that's mostly on the drive, that's definite overkill. Not gonna argue with the Hammerite :)

I had a steel rudder on Hurley 22. I used to paint it with the very cheap car body underseal - the rubbery stuff not the modern posh waxy stuff.

Best option, even better than a rust converter like Vactan or similar.

I think your choices will be:
1) Replace with S/Steel :D
2) Shot blast and Galvanise
3) Shot blast and Epoxy
4) Clean and paint hammerite etc
5) Rust Converter Vactan, Ferotan, blue steel primer.

In my mind the problem with no 2 is if you chip the paint or it is not perfect the rust will come back...

3&4 depends what your preferance is mine?

Rust converter as per instructions, Hammer-rite as per instructions, primer 2+ use up any old primer you have, undercoat, Anti-foul.

The more paint the better in my humble opinion.
