Painting Bilges

Preparation is the key. So, please clean thoroughly first (and I'd like to know what with, particularly a cleaner strong enough to clean up diesel)

I would start with Gunk (or the like) engine cleaner.

looking very smart! Did you use same to paint the engine as well...?

Used International Toplac for engine three years ago, obviously did not do exhaust parts etc.

As you can see it has not peeled or faded so far and wipes easily.

Is there any point in painting the bilges?

when time comes to sell your boat some potential buyers don't like painted bilges as that can also indicate grounding damage, and DIY paintjob can indicate dodgy structural work.

Also, years after, quite often you see cracks in the paint, which appear worrying to prospective buyer, although the cracks are only in the paint not structural again you may lose potential buyers.

So, there is a school of thought not to paint bilges for cosmetic reasons. Only do it if really necessary, i.e. after laminating work etc.
