I could probably be considered to be a bit OTT with general servicing. But that said, in the 10+ years i've had Volvo engines & out-drives, the only non-maintenance item i've had to work on is a prop-shaft seal.

I have a boat worth, let's say for arguments sake, £100k. A 2 x engine / out-drive service costs me, maybe, £250 (all work done by myself).... I'd spend that on a night out.... it's not worth thinking about.

Trust me, I am far from loose with money (started with 'big' boats in my early 20's so didn't have it to throw about), but I don't care if it's coincidence that my regular servicing has meant trouble-free boating, but it's certainly not doing any damage.

Well all I can say is you have expensive nights out. Bravo for doing the work yourself. You know what has been done and any issues you might find on the way

Rather like spending £250 on a night out many people could not afford to do this as indeed they could not afford to spend this amount on annual work on their boat. These are facts for much of the world

Those are just words and mean very little. The word service has ripped people off for many years and will for many years to come. The words Changed oil and spark plugs are the words that should be used not just service far too generic

Dennis

How little you seem to know.
All manufacturers use a service list stating frequency of checks/replacements.
Perhaps always boating on the cheap makes one unaware aware of this.
Each to their own!

Well, despite some of the stories of expensive repairs to outdrives and the importance of service history we have just done a deal on a sports cruiser with twin outdrives and not a lot in the way of documented service history! :)

To be fair the boat has, over recent years, been a stock boat with the broker four or five times so each time will have been well prepped and serviced and we know some previous owners who say it is an excellent boat and was well looked after. It is currently a stock boat so there is also some level of warranty.

We have been at this point earlier in the year with the same model but things didn’t go well at survey so fingers crossed for hull and outdrive survey on Friday :)

That is how you see it and your opinion, many of us who pay for regular servicing using correct parts and procedures don’t feel ripped off or we wouldn’t keep doing it.

Not sure what you do for a living but I’m sure your competitors can do a cheaper job rather than be ripped off by you which is how they probably see it, for you to own so many boats your time obviously isn’t cheap.

Sealine S34 Pete.
Back to a sports cruiser after our fabulous Broom 41 so will need to get used to a little less space and the inventory from the Broom currently sitting in the garage sure as hell isnt going to fit on the Sealine! :)

You assume that I do not know what you state..... Your first error, I stand by what I said

You assue I boat on the cheap ........ You do not know what I spend or what I consider cheap (It is relative)..... Your second error

You got the each to their own right so 1 out of 3 or 33.3%

Many people just keep doing it out of Habit without thought this is how many companies make their money.

Not sure what I do for a living has got anything to do with you or indeed this thread and as for my competitors perhaps there are none.

Regarding Time we all have exactly the same amount it is just a matter of how we choose to use it

My service invoices detail very clearly precisely what's been done. And it certainly isn't just changing the oil and spark plugs.

We're getting a bit "Fur coat and no knickers" here.

It is a well known fact that often, buying the boat is only half the battle... maintaining and associated costs are very much a factor to be taken into consideration. I have a 37ft sports cruiser as I can afford easily to maintain it. Technically speaking, I could go and buy a modern 50footer fly-bridge in Spain, but maintaining (and associated costs) would stretch me.... therefore I consider I can't afford it, simple as.

We all have our guilty secrets :)

Thanks, just hope there isn’t anything significant on the survey tomorrow.
