I am looking at buy an outboard for my new Zodiac 260.

What is the best type, size and combination (2 stroke/4 stroke) to go for?

A neighbour at the marina turned up with a brand new Honda 2hp 4 stroke, he paid little over £300 for it and it comes with a 5 year warranty, so i t seems a safe bet. After spending 2 hours trying to start it for the first time, he set of in his dinghy to try it out, Personally i think its a nice wee motor, But it was very noisey!

Are all small outboards as noisy as that, or was it because it was 4 stroke?

4 Stroke also seem handy cause no need to mix fuel/oil? Yes/No?

I also here a lot of talk about some of you getting your tenders to plane, so should i go for something bigger and have more fun? And me being 6'4" tall and weighing 13st, is there any chance of that happening?

Where is best place to buy them, online or in swindleries?

Cheers....

Alistair

without going through the reasons - they are there in spades if you search the forums even within the last 3 months, -
If you just want a prop consider the Yam 2 or baby Honda (349 ish) ,if you don't want 'full planning performance' but wan't go then the Tohatsu 3.5S (lowest price I can find is 359) - F/N gears weight 13.5kg
Higher fun (plane with you) Tohatsu 5B-S - 555 - /f/n/r weight 22kg

We bought a mariner 4HP 2 stroke about 3 months ago for our tender (a wetline230) it planes very easily with more than 13 stone onboard, 4 strokes are normaly quieter but are heavy and you have to store them very carefuly!

We have since bought a new boat with a rib as tender and a 15hp motor so we now have a lovely spare 4hp mariner with about 1 hours use! (may be persuaded to part with it) I tried it on the rib which is a 260 I think and it planes quite hapily with 1 onboard.

The honda 2hp is air cooled...that's why it's relatively noisy.Don't know if the yam 2.5hp 4/t is air cooled?? but the 2000 4hp yam 4T is v.very quiet 'til you open it up, then a fair amount of intake noise....but weight is most manageable,'tho considerably more than a 2T.

No need to mix oil on 4t, but they need to be laid down on one side only/not turned upside down to avoid engine oil getting where it shouldn't.

Prices vary depending on current deals: a dealer is nicer if you've a warranty problem & often as cheap as online. Warrantys can cost you a lot over the years in dealer servicing, regardless of hours used.

The Yam 2.5hp 4 stroke is water cooled so it's relatively quiet. If I just wanted to potter about then I think I'd buy it even though it is a bit heavier than the Merc/Mariner/Johnson/Tohatsu 3.3 or 3.5hp 2 strokes. The Honda 2 is slightly lighter than these.
I used to have a Typhoon 3m dinghy with heavy wooden floor. This needed atleast 5hp to plane, two up - went very well with a 6hp Johnson 2 stroke. If you want speed then go for an 8hp 2 stroke which will be much lighter than the equivalent 4 stroke.
As has been mentioned before there have been loads of posts on this subject within the last 3 to 4 months so I suggest you have a trawl through the archives. Have fun !!

Sorry to high-jack your thread but it may be of use to many....
I'm looking for a replacement o/b for my RIB. It was fitted with a Mercury 60. I'd only had it a couple of months and although it was a '98 model, it was unused & in the crate when I got it.
Firstly, although I paid my insurance premium for a £4000 engine, what am I likely to get as a pay-out?
Secondly, where can I find a good discount place to buy a replacement? There are so many people advertising to be "discount" but they are simply liars! Their prices are just the same as any other dealer!!!
Many thanks folks.
