I think this may have already been said somewhere but I cant pin it down. I need to move a small 5hp outboard motor by car, and was wondering the safest way of doing so.

Any comments greatly appreciated, apologies if this is repeated elsewhere.

if a 4 cycle, care must be taken to see that oil drain is pointed up to keep from draining oil out, if 2 cycle not a problem except for gas tank, on either motor, prob should be empty, carb bowl also. other than that, inside of car would reduce chance of thieft.

Really no problems I have done it for years. Note comments re 4 strokes. Run as much fuel as possible out of the carb. If it is an integral tank make sure the vent and tap are closed. Allow water to drain by standing upright for a while.

Protect the car boot with some newspaper, old carpet, pastic bag. Keep windows open a bit to dispel petrol fumes.
