I hope some one can help. I sent my Evinrude 4 hp outboard vintage 1971/2 into my local agent to replace the starter cord which he did but he lost one of the springs.

The outboard has what is called a swing arm gear drive starter which evinrude fitted to 4hp motors between 1969 and 1972 the spring he lost is not the one that returns the starter core into the starter but the normal coil type spring that causes the swing gear to engage into the flywheel gear.

If any one can tell me the dimensions of the spring ie o/d, wire dia, length and number of coils i can get one made. Or if any one can supply one i would be very greatfull.

I dont want to have to replace the motor as other than this it works fine.

Is this a small white plastic (or nylon) arm that swings on a short stud and connects with one of four lobes in the top of the flywheel or does a separate starter spindle rise up and engage a cog with a ring gear around the circumference of the flywheel (really old design)? Does the motor have a square tank on top and a plastic skirt around it's lower powerhead?

Let me know (I won't read any reply until monday) as there is a long established (1939) OMC dealer near here who is bound to have one in his plethora of old bits.

Hi Rogershaw!

I trust your local agent is also searching around to sort out 'his' problem! Will look in my box of outboard bits over the weekend and see if I've got anything like you need. Doubtful, but I'll try.

As you say, it would be a real shame to ditch a perfectly good outboard, so hope you get a spring from somewhere.

Good sailing!

Hi Steve
Thanks for the reply. The spring looks like a normal open coil compression spring like an car engine valve spring. I think it puts friction on the starter case to cause it to engage in the gear on the flywheel. There is a picture in the CLYMER manual I got from west marine top of page 331. If you could PM me with your E-Mail address I could send you the picture.

I see from your BIO you are into MG's. I am currently rebuilding a 1963 MGB together with various others Triumph's, Lotus and a Jensen but work gets in the way of this. Where is the OMC dealer you refer to as I used to live in Northampton before I came to South Africa 22 years age.
