Remove spark plug and check for correct colour (pale brown) therefore good combustion.
Measure compression (should be 100 psi or higher)
Check ignition by pulling engine over with old plug fitted to lead and earthed to block opened up to about 5mm, should have a lilac spark, if yellow\orange you have a weak ignition system.
If above is OK install new plug.
Drain gearbox and check for water in the oil ( milky appearance) if OK fill up with fresh from the bottom hole to avoid airlocks.
Check condition of anodes if fitted, change if less than 50% remaining.
Remove prop and grease shaft and check shear pins for wear, prop for nicks\damage if OK refit.
Grease all nipples and controls i.e. carb, choke linkages etc.
Check condition of fuel hoses and connectors for leaks\splits, clean filter if fitted.
Make sure all electrical cables are secured and can't chafe
Run the engine in a tub of water and check for good flow from exhaust telltale (sometimes blocks with salt so clean with a piece of wire) If the flow is poor and the engine heats up quickly and the cylinder head and exhaust cover get too hot to touch ( indicates either defective impellor or blocked cooling passages in the block\head).
Adjust idle and mixture if necessary, and spray all electrics with WD 40 or Corrosion Guard.
If poss run it in fresh water after each use
If laying up do all of this at the end of the season and spray conservation oil into the carb after running in fresh water for 15 mins till the engine dies, and drain the float bowl. Then fit the NEW plug so its ready for the next season.
All excellent advice. I would add:
- Check black plastic gear change handle for free and easy movement. Rinse well with fresh water as there is a tendency for salt build-up eventually to make it very stiff to move and a pig to remove and service.
