Outboard Problems

At the risk of being accused of being a "taker" and not a "giver" on this forum, here's my second question:

I have an old Suzuki DT50 outboard, since it has been serviced it revs uncontrollably. If you gently increase the revs up to about 1500 RPM all is well, but, if you take the revs higher (either with the idle throttle or main control) the revs won't drop until you stop the engine. When the engine is restarted all is well again until you rev it.

As far as I can see all levers and linkages are returning when you move the levers back (including the ignition advance) when the engine is running.

Any ideas?

TIA,
John

loosen links between carbs, back out idle screw till all carb butterflys are fully closed ,push with screwdriver to make sure that they are closed. retighten links, readjust idle screw, start and try again, email me if this don't work.

Sounds to me like it could be
The throttle spindles are worn thus causing the butterfly to stick in the throttle housing, this could also mean air being drawn in through the spindle bores
The float chamber needle valve is sticking causing flooding ( doughtful but !! )
The float chamber gaskets are not correctely seated ( doughtful but !! )
The actual fuel lines and fittings are in good order ( doughtful but !! )
Ignition timing ,how old is the engine if old has it got the advance and retard arm connected to the base plate, if so if the plate is sticking or loose !! ( again doughtful but !! )
Old engines are old engines
So why did you have it serviced ,were the compression tests ok did they tank test it before you collected it and did you get it serviced by a respected service agent or get a mate to do it
Things are a little easier to diagnose if we have all the facts , but even then there may yet be another reason for the fault one which is difficult to trace

Thanks for the advice everybody. If it's not raining too hard tomorrow I'll give some of the ideas a try and let you know how I get on.

I did get the engine serviced at a boat yard, they say they tested it and I believe them, perhaps the 100 mile trailer ride upset it afterwards.

In people's experience does it make a difference if you go to a main engine dealer for servicing?
