I have a Tohatsu 8hp 2 stroke that sits in the port locker of a Hunter Horison 26 that needs replacing. a 4 stroke with the equivalent power will not fit. I have been told that a Tohatsu sail drive would do the job but does seem a little under powered. the alternative would
be a Yamaha 9.9 hung on the transom. Although a nice boat ides no warrant the expense of fitting a diesel. Ideas please.

Always liked the Hunter Horizon.

So we are looking at a displacement of 2 tons with a max hull speed of 6 knots

Is the Tohatsu you are thinking about 6HP ?
I would have thought that it might just suit your needs.
Would be a shame to move it from the locker to the transom.

Might be worth contacting the Hunter association to see
what others have .

Are you sure a 4 stroke won’t fit? I ask only because my old Super Seal 26 had an outboard well sized for a 2 stroke. The previous owner had shoehorned a Yamaha 4 stroke in there with only minimal alterations.

If the present engine isn't a sail drive I would think that a 6hp saildrive would be adequate. The sail drive normally has a much bigger prop that goes at a lower speed so more torque imho.
Trying to compare outboards, especially high speed with sail drive is a nightmare and no one really knows the answer !

He has no well ... he says the locker is not big enough ...

Edit : Sorry - his terminology using word locker instead of well .... I then noted its a Hunter Horizon ...

Thank you all for your input. I would have much preferred the yamaha 9.9 however space in the locker does not permit and to hang it on the back would be a shame. Though I understand
that I could rebuild the 2 stroke I would rather update to a 4. It seems that the Tohatsu 6 saildrive may not be ideal but a good compromise.
