Hello all,

Have any of you knowledgeable people owned / sailed a Van De Stadt Jupiter 30 and if so what is your thoughts on them? I see a couple have popped up for sale and look to be a solid 80's IOR style fast(ish) cruiser. I'm sorely tempted to go and view but it's a long trip so I thought asking here was a better starting point. Any and all thoughts welcome.

Don't know the boat at all but I have been looking at the market around that price and it seems a cracking buy. Appears to be exceptionally well fitted out below decks, with lots of solid teak that looks in good condition for the year and outstanding for the price. It has most of the useful things you might expect in a good cruising boat and some that you would not.
Lots of beam, ballast and draught so should be a safe comfortable and undemanding sail. The sort of boat you could happily take on extended trips

If it is what it appears to be I would think it will sell ok, certainly after the festivities, might be well worth nipping in.

PS.

Forgot to say I am assuming it is the Welsh one 😳

Van de Stadt has good reputation in all models. Basically 'old school'.

But at end of day - there's not much we can say as to Buy or Not Buy ... a photo can look fab - but get to boat and find out its not quite so dandy ... I've seen other way as well ... seller no chance to clean up .. boat looks untidy and shabby ... but in fact is good under the sellers crap

Boat buying as I have mentioned before for me is 'gut feeling' ... yes you look round the boat ... but in reality - if the boat does not hit you in the gut within first look round as YES ... its probably not the boat that fits what you want ... if you have to look round it a number of times trying to decide - then either make a silly offer or walk away ...
You will be 'living' with the boat you decide on ...

I think the general consensus is that Van de Stadt hasn't really designed any bad boats, so the basic design will be fine, as long as it suits your purposes.
I've always liked the look of boats of that size, type and era myself.

When I was in the Caribbean in the Dominic Republic, I meet two Norwegian lads who had one . We looked over each others boats as you do when you are cruising and I was favourably impressed, had some nice features. I didn't sail on it but I met them later in Haiti and then Cuba. They had got caught in a storm with 30 - 40 knots of wind in between Dominica and Hiati had a bit of a knockdown but came through it OK so reckon a Jupiter is a capable boat.
