I have very recently re-registered some very old Maptech (MemoryMap) charts on my new Win7 PC. I initially had problems and spoke (email) to Maptech but they only gave me the same registration code that came with the original charts anyway.

The essential part of their reply was...
"Your BA Region 2 is quite old, and one of the BA's policies is that we are not supposed to register older Editions of their charts when there is a newer Edition available.

However, we will allow you to install them again since you have only used 1 installation previously.
In the future however, we will require you to obtain the latest charts in order to use them again as to be able to keep within the UKHO's policies as well.

If you have Windows 7:
With Maptech software and Memory-Map software closed,
insert the BACD02 Chart CD into the drive.
Windows 7 has a tendency to open an Auto Play box.
If it does, choose to "Open Folder to View Files".

(If it doesn't open an Auto Play box, open Computer.
Right-click on the cd/dvd listing and choose Open.)

Find the file Register.exe, and right-click it, choose "Run As an Administrator."
Click the Register Chart CD button.
Then choose the middle choice of registration, "On this Computer, Not Connected to the Internet".
Click Next"

They have a lot of information on this page... Technical documents.

So they are saying that whilst you 'bought' the charts, once a new version appears your purchase is effectively void?

That would be like saying that an old Beatles album has to be binned because you can get it on CD now.

I really do not get the principle behind IP law!

With respect, there is nothing in IP law which dictates or supports Maptechs' policy as reported and I am prepared to bet that a court would overturn their refusal to re-register since that was a term of the original contract. The problem is firms try to get away with they shouldn't be allowed to, but there's nothing specific to IP law about that...

I spoke to maptech the other day after failing again to register, they have washed their hands of it all!

Was that Maptech or Maptech Navigation (001 978 834-9950 (M-F; 10:00am - 4:00pm; U.S. Eastern Time)) that you spoke to? If the latter then I am disappointed (or will be when I want to re-register).

Memory Map are pointing us towards Maptech Navigation so I would hope they would honour the support of Maptech products sold through Memory Map.

For UK waters, I struggle to see the point of opencpn & opencpn charts, when progs like Belfield Charplotter with all 800 UKHO Uk Raster charts (ARCS) is only about £60 and now Polarnavy supply all the UKHO UK vector charts (AVCS) with PolarView NS for a massive £51.99 (~$70).

It took barely took a week for the cd to arrive from USA and 10mins to unzip the S63 charts and import them into PolarView. This also has nmea output for an AP (Belfields doesn't).

The cost to update them annually is about £50

wow, been away for a while since my last post about getting the old CM93 charts from a torrent. didnt realise I would create such a storm of ethics over some old out of date charts!? eek. does anyone really care about the copyright on those old charts?

If my plotter was my source of navigation I would BUY new in date ones. I prefer to spend the money on new paper charts as they are my primary source of navigation. The pc plotter is just SA for me so I dont really mind if its out of date. Incidently, the tsunamis99 I prefer to use, I did not buy either. a good friend of mine bought it and let me use his disk to install it and the charts on my system. we help each other out like that.

I was going to offer to burn the CM93 on to a disk and send them to the original poster but it sounds like I will go to hell if I do that or certainly end up in jail with a full body cavity search thrown in for good measure.

Hi everyone,

This is an interesting debate, but please be aware that any links to illegal downloads or instructions on how you can gain illegal copies of charts will be pulled.

We have received a number of complaints about users breaking the law by doing exactly this and as a result, I am keeping a close eye on this.

Thanks,

Laura
