Can anyone advise how to integrate NASA's AIS engine into OpenCPN charting software?

Grateful any/all assistance

Should be as easy as plugging a serial/usb adaptor between the laptop and the ais engine.

Then in settings/connections add a serial port set to the port the ais is connected to. If you are on windows you can open the device manager (windows key then type dev man) , under ports there should be something listed with a com port, use this port in the settings.
Then click apply and should be there. Tip, if the receiver isn't receiving anything you can turn the engine off and on again, this will send a test message . Also on the settings/connections page there's a tick box near top right which displays all the raw incoming nmea messages.

1 Buy a serial to USB converter, one with a 9-pin serial connector
2 Plug the converter into your computer - assuming it's Windows, check device manager "ports" tab and see which port has been assigned
3 Start OpenCPN, open tools (spanner) and then "connections" tab
4 Make new connection - serial, with the port number you identified
5 Set baud rate to 38400 and confirm
6 Open NMEA data window to confirm your data is coming through
7 Use tools to set up your preferred AIS parameters.
8 Make sure AIS targets are enabled on toolbar

That's it!
