OPEN CPN

As a bit of a thread drift but still relevant........ is / are CM93 still the best option for 'free' world charting and if so which version ? Any valid other options worth a mention that feed into charting / plotting software?

"Free" ?? Actually all CM93 versions are Copyright .... but because of the Jeppersen scandal - Vers2 has basically become 'free' ....

Ver2 is basically the only version that many plotting programs can use. Ver3 is encrypted and I know of only one program out there for likes of us that looks and feels like OpenCPN - its only PC based TELChart. But you need the key for v3.
Maxsea International and dkART Navigator run v3 as well .... but that's paid stuff.

You may need to give OpenCPN permission to access the SD card in Android Settings before it will see the mounted card.

Latest versions will not allow SD card charts at all. OpenCPN has a migration option, but this seemingly does not work properly with CM93 charts. Perhaps it works with some devices but not others no just an issue with latest software versions, I don't know.

Didn't work, but it gave me a clue.
I installed app and the chart data onto the internal storage. All working ok.
Then went to settings, apps, open cpn, storage. Then changed setting for storage used from internal to SD card. It takes a minute or so to do this.
Came out of setttings and re started open cpn and its running ok.
Yippee I thought.
But in file manager all the files and the app are still on the internal memory and have not been moved even though it says they have. Bummer.
I think its just moved the location for any storage in the app and not the app and data over. I may as well go back to as was.
Hang on, just found another setting option. Something else to try.

Done it!
Need to change the app permissions. It's hidden away but found it.
Settings, Apps, Open CPN, Permissions, then top tight corner three dots gives you "all permissions".Select that and then select "read the content of your sdcard. It doesn't seem to do anything but when you go back into the app and tools to select your chart source you can now see the sdcard. I moved my charts onto the sdcard, redirected the app to there for the charts and YES it works, Just the tides to get working now after i copied it across from internal to sd card..
Seems it can't read that file. download again and try again.
OK all done and working. Brilliant.
Just tried to do it on my son's android 12 and the permissions aren't there to change. Probably in another place, need to find them.

Just run all recent updates, and "read the content of your sdcard " is not an option. The 3 dots are there, which I havn't noticed before - handy to know. Might try your original theory of finding the files for the British Isles and moving them manually to the 'migrated' folder.
