Help needed. I've not used Open cpn on my tablet for a while now as I've had it on my laptop and Ras pi. I'm just trying to reinstall it and get it working. I installed the latest version from playstore and then installed the charts(cm93) on the SD card. Open cpn can't now see the sd card so I can't select the chart directory. Is this a new problem that needs a work around or am I missing something. Puzzled by this.

OK .. I have latest OpenCPN Android 4.1 ....

My Tablet has 2 SD Cards ... one as internal non changeable and second as user accessible. Tablet has Android 4.4 ....

OpenCPN accesses BOTH cards as well as fixed memory of tablet.

To access the cards - in tablet settings - I have to make sure I MOUNT the cards ....

OK I re mounted the card. Still can't see it in CPN. Seems its been an issue since 2017. All works fine on laptop and Ras pi but not on Android. Certainly not on Android 7 anyway. Just tried it on another tablet on Android 12 and not working on that either. I've also been reading user reviews about opencpn and its getting a bit of a slating on the android platform. Shame really as it used to be a good backup system for me. It still will be but will have to be on the PI or laptop now.

When I set chart directory ... OpenCPN did not see cards until I clicked ADD in OpenCPN Chart setup .... then I could choose location.

If that also fails >>>>>>>

Why not get hold of an older Android tablet such as I have .. with Android 4 ?? The speed is more than enough and it works fine. Dedicate to the job and bobs your uncle.

In fact when I compare my old 'Banggood' Android 4 tablet to my mates iPad ... mine beats his hands down !!

To reduce file size you could limit your files to those that you are likely to use. The file names are codes but I can't remember what they are. Anyone?
That would be the best fix for me I think. I did once see the list of files against area covered but can't remember where. Probably in my bookmarks somewhere but got so many now I can never find anything. :)

Have you tried selecting chart location from the 3 vertical dots drop-down menu in the top right corner and selecting SDCard as in the screenshot below?

Yes tried that but it just doesn't see the SD card at all. My version doesn't have that option to select sdcard or device at the top. It seems to be something that everyone is having problems with after a certain revision of Android operating system. I'm in the process of trying to identify and isolate the cmap files I need for my sailing area and then I'l put them and only them on the internal storage.

This was for an older version but it might still hold true.

The primary folders are numerical like this 03900900.
To understand what content is in the folder we must break it down into two sections.

The first 3 numbers represent Latitude:

003=80S-60S 009=60S-40S 015=40S-20S 021=20S-Equator 027=Equator-20N
033=20N-40N 039=40N-60N 045=60N-80N

The last four digits represent longitude. Read from left to right.

0000=0E 0060=20E 0120=40E 0180=60E 0240=80E
0300=100E 0360=120E 0420=140E 0480=160E 0540=180E or W
0600=160W 0660=140W 0720=120W 0780=100W 0840=80W
0900=60W 0960=40W 1020=20W

Thanks for that info. I had worked out some of that but still in its formative stage with me. I haven't had Covid but I think I've got the brain fog that comes with it.

If you solve this then please let me know as I gave up and used something else.

At the moment I'm running it from the internal storage with full cmaps files on the internal storage as well. I also updated the tides and currents files to show all the world instead of the restricted pack that comes as standard in the open cpn installation. I'm trying to reduce the file size for cm93 by deleting chart areas using the above information in previous posts to identify the areas I don't need. That part of the process is not doing so well but if I ever get there I'll post an update on here. I think I need a bigger brain though and grand kids are staying with me at the moment so no quiet time at the moment to concentrate.
I've given up trying to use the SD card. There appears to be no solution to this that I can easily execute. Googled it and some people have been messing with android config files etc etc to get open cpn to see the sd card. Out of my depth with that one so I'm leaving well alone.

If its purely that OpenCPN is incompatible with later Androids use of SD Cards .... why not look at it from 180 degrees ?

If your established data can be read by apps when on SD card ... then why not swap over ? Have CM93 on internal memory and other on SD card ??
Or as I suggested earlier ... get hold of an older Android tablet running vers 4.4 or similar ...

My Mediatek's (two), Nexus (my DJI tablet) and Cavion all run OpenCPN from SD card with no problem or lag ... leaving newer gear to run my other stuff ...
In fact I have difficulty deciding which I will dedicate to the boat. Even the Cavion which does not have internal GPS, receive all data from my WiFi plexor ...

Its a pity that CM93 encrypted vers3 after the 'leak' from Hong Kong Jeppersens ... understandable really .... but vers 3 is so much better than vers 2 ...
I cannot see OpenCPN running the risk of hacking vers3 to run ...

As a bit of a thread drift but still relevant........ is / are CM93 still the best option for 'free' world charting and if so which version ? Any valid other options worth a mention that feed into charting / plotting software?
