I have been using Open CPN on my old computer and my phone for as long time, a very old version of Open CPN

I get a nice clear chart display with the land showing as yellow, The shore line where it dries in green, shallow water in blue, deep water in white, all bouys shown as the colour they are, and lots of text identifying thing and places.

I have just downloaded the latest version (for linux) which is 5.0.0

This is what I get. It's horrble. Lots of information missing, no different colours for shallow or deep water etc.

It is not a chart issue, i am using the same charts.

I have everything turned on. I only have an option for 2 colour or 4 colour, I have selected 4 colour.

Either the latest version of Open CPN is rubbish, or it is sent out with lousy default settings.

How can I get the nice chart display I am used to please?

Have a look in Settings at Charts > Vector Chart Display and check the various settings there...

Beaten to it by GHA, but interesting to note the differences in setup :)

That's just about how I have it set up.

Experimenting more, it's the 2 colour / 4 colour thing. It makes no difference which I select. So I think mine is for some reason stuck in 2 colour mode and won't select 4 colour.

Are there any other options elsewhere that will prevent it going to 4 colour mode?

You've rung a bell in my memory about graphics accelerators, have a look at Display > Advanced > Graphics and see if you can/are using OpenGL

It is using OpenGL I have tried all sorts of options including not using OpenGL and nothing seems to change.

I want it to display as 2 posts above. but I seem stuck in this 2 colour mode in spite of selecting 4 colour, clicking apply, and even closing and re starting etc.

In your OP you talk about it being an old computer, I just wonder if theres something that OCPN now needs as a pre-req that isnt installed. Could it be an old OS that needs to be updated to install whatever function library OCPN now needs ?

No this is my new computer. the old one has a really ancient version of OpenCPN that works fine.

But this is the first time I have tried a linux version. Should I try the windows version and see if it works under WINE?
What charts are you using?
CM93 displaying fine on a Raspberry Pi3

Does look like the depths are being shown as drying heights ,maybe time to ask the grownups >

Just switched into my Linux system, Mint 19.3, installed and checked OCPN - all worked as it should for colors. I'm out of ideas if you installed following the documented process, for me thats a Ubuntu base using a PPA and a command line install

Well no luck. I downloaded 4.0.0 and that behaves exactly the same, stuck in 2 colour mode.

I then tried 3.2.2 which is the version on my old computer. I could not get that to read my charts (though that version on the old computer does)

These were both windows versions running under WINE, I have not found an old linux version to try.

Sounds like Graphic Card settings not OCPN

I must say that on my Acer One - all maps include CM93 display fully graphically ... but if I use my later Core Acer - I have similar as you ... the graphics look as though I've gone back 20years !!
