Does anyone here have any experience of hiring a van, one way, from Ireland to the UK and vice versa?

OK, scenario:
Next year, I sail with Tigger to NW Ireland and leave her there (say at Kilrush, or Galway). I may need to transport things (e.g. tools, items I don't want to leave on board, stuff for maintenance) back home (Reading, UK). Viceversa, later on.
What do you think would be best?
1) hire a van in Ireland (Galway/Shannon), and transport back to the UK (and vice versa, later)
2) hire a van in Belfast, drive to the boat (Kilrush, or Galway) load up and drive to the UK (and vice versa, later)
3) forget about it, and arrange some transport by plane from Shannon to Heathrow/Gatwick or with an international courier
All solutions are likely to be quite expensive.
even if they are personal effects not to be used for commercial purposes?May get quite pricey as you'd either need to Carnet the goods or possibly get stung for VAT every time you took them there or back.

I have no personal experience of this but I'd be reasonably confident OP won't have any difficulties bringing clearly used personal items back and forwards from his boat. Obviously if you have contrary experience or specific knowledge then I stand corrected and I'm sure we'd all be interested to read the details.May get quite pricey as you'd either need to Carnet the goods or possibly get stung for VAT every time you took them there or back.
Use Move Anything Anywhere. FREE Delivery Quotes - AnyVan.com and have them deliver what you want and when. I have used them a few times. Usually, your stuff is a part load, so you don't get it the next day. But the drivers seem reliable and honest (otherwise they would not last long on the platform).OK, scenario:

Really, you will need to research the costs of those various options and get it down to a bottom line. To my mind, option 1, hiring a van as near as possible to your boat and paying the €150 Cross-Border one way fee would seem like the most efficient option.OK, scenario:

Would it be cheaper and simpler to buy an old banger, and dump or sell it after useDoes anyone here have any experience of hiring a van, one way, from Ireland to the UK and vice versa?
Problems of importing from the EU?Would it be cheaper and simpler to buy an old banger, and dump or sell it after use
I don't see why, it surely is no different to taking your car on holiday. It would only "Importing" if you declared that it was not going back, and who cares about a worthless van?Problems of importing from the EU?

As a retired insurance Broker, I don't see why it should be difficultInsurance might not be the easiest thing to arrange.
