On the move

Think thicker than veneer, say 4-5mm thick, and boxwood strips, same thickness but suitable width, have a look at the classic launches, no need to chobble anything, a steaming box might be handy too. Come to think of it, 6mm thick would not be out of the way, much easier to sand to get it all smooth and level.

The ply deck is only 9mm maybe less . They where built as race boats so i am told , had a 45HP outboard on the back /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

That's ok, the thin planking I have tried to describe will fix to it ok, well, as long as it isn't rotten?...Like I said, research all the boats of a similar style that you can, and that mahogony, really doesn't deserve to be covered in paint, on some boats it would be appropriate, but I feel that on yours ..............well she would look so nice all varnished and glowing in the sunshine. Just the job for the Thames! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The best of luck with her, I will be interested to see how you get on, and what you decide to do.

I'm not sure if you are saying over plank the ply with solid timber or let solid timber into the ply ? There is no rot on the boat ....... well not any seen yet and dammmmm we have looked !
The thing with the deck is that the detailed lines where painted on to start with so this is in keeping with a boat that no one has really messed around with since it was built . If we start inlaying timber then we are messing with a history of a boat builder that built six of these run abouts . This one is number six of six . Bits and bobs can be changed but cutting into the deck or changing structual things would be a shame in my opinion as it's boating history . But thats just me maybe ?

That looks familiar ( I mean the steering wheel, which is identical). This was taken about 1963 and showed our fleet on Windermere. The lfejackets were fun. The engine was a 25hp Perkins and it was a pig. The boat was pretty though. Not quite to the standard of yours but still a tidy craft.

Yes over plank, but you must do what you feel is right, we can all make suggestions, and give advice, but at the end of the day, it's how you feel that counts /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think our one was supplied with a perkins as we have some paper work from them . You say it was a pig . Larry probably fell overboard trying to start it then /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ive just uploaded some pictures of her when she was in storage .

Oxalic acid

I have just uncovered her to let the sun dry out the coat of boiled linseed oil and some black staining is grinning at me . Would Oxalic acid leave the area bleached and would i have to do the whole deck to stop this ?

Re: Oxalic acid

Does Milton also bleach the wood ? did you have to do the whole deck ?

I have just cut a bit of cuban to see if it matches ......

Not bad eh /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Oxalic acid

Started putting on some new rubbing strakes around the deck today , only cut them close as there is no point finishing the topsides untill we have sorted the hull . I started rubbing down the hull and i think it has been painted with antifoul undercoat or primer . It's that heavy looking metalic paint that when rubbed down sticks to your skin . A messy job but i think it all needs to come off as it's not a good base for a finish ....... unless anyone knows otherwise ?

Re: Oxalic acid

I finished the port side this evening and started on the stbd . It seems the timber used is Cuban Mahogany so no chance of getting any of that /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
