Hello readers

I've recently had my old 60hp Ford Tractor engine, marinised by Parsons, removed for an overhaul. Unfortunately for me, the cost of new parts (exhaust manifold being just one of many) has made me consider replacing it. It is about 50 years old, perhaps more, so I will be sorry to see it go.

The yacht is about 13 tonnes gross, wooden, 38ft LOA and is lying in the Algarve.

I have looked at Beta who have a distributor close by and MPS who are a lot lot cheaper and will ship out at small cost.

I would be grateful for any other distributor and manufacturer recommendations, advise on potential pitfalls and if anyone is looking for spares from the old engine and or best way to dispose of it. I will be keeping the Alternator!

It must be Diesel and with as shallow Sump as possible to avoid too much carpentry.

Thanks for reading.

Dunno if this is of any interest but my Beta had a drain plug under the sump, oil changes much easier than without one. Couldn't fault the engine & would happily have another...

I also have a Beta and you can get a shallow sump(from memory). I chose the Beta because the cost was reasonable, sump drain pump fitted as standard, sea water pump easy to get at for servicing, high exhaust also available, special feet can be made to suit your engine bearers, I had this done so only had to raise them, an easy job instead of completely new bearers. Recommended company.
Other engine I looked at was Vetus BUT you had to accept their standard engine, NO modifications could be done( and the sea water pump was difficult to get at and NO oil drain pump.
Make sure prop rotationis the same otherwise you may need a new prop. I also fitted non leak stern gland, new noise insulation, prop and shaft.

I've gone for a Volvo Penta D2-55 and its currently being shipped to the Algarve. Problem is I can not seem to find anyone willing to install it for me as am not confident with setting up accurate alignment with the Shaft. I'm going to Albufeira on Friday when I will ask around in person. Is anyone able to offer any recommendations for a reliable and competent installer. Thanks.

More likely to get appropriate answers on Liveaboard.

When I re-engined I bought in UK, shipped out to Malta and had it fitted @ Manoel Island in Malta.

You're looking at a marinised Kubota or Isuzu (cheap and cheerful) or a Yanmar (designed for marine use)

John Deere/Caterpillar though superb engines are too big for your boat.

Volvo are marinised Perkins engines and demand unjustified premium prices.

Are you planning on doing it in the water or hauling out?

Ria Formosa Boatyard at Olhao have engineers on site who will do as much or as little as you need. Bruce's yard navepegos.com also a possibility.
