Just a thought to see if practical. Does anyone use an on board docking video camera to assist berthing manoeuvres ? Interested in any suggestions.

We have one on a motorbike handlebar ball mount that clips to the siderail. The camera is the Panasonic reccomended by Dylan of KTL.

Rather than assisting berthing it keeps a record aurally and visually of cock ups..................................

Our new boat has a large pilothouse. First Mate, who is I/C berthing might find a video camera system handy as she cant see the side of the boat, cant see where I am with the warps and now steers from the middle of the boat , not the aft end.

Such a system as you suggest good be a good thing.

JFM on the mobo forum has one under the bow for keeping an eye on the anchor when operating the windlass from the flybridge.

I find they have problems lifting the boathook, moving fenders, don't warn you of anything, don't make the tea or buy beer at the bar.

Have a look on youtube - "Second Chance Sailing" mentioned one on a recent video.. fitted at the bow of a 26'er if i remember right along with a biggish tv in the saloon.

Wouldnt be my solution though

I suppose if you had a restricted view astern it might be handy.

Not for me though. My but is about 6 inches from the stern when I am behind the wheel, I suppose it could also depend on the relevant ratio when ones stern is compared to the boats:)

I'll argue that precise information is fairly pointless without precise control. For a high sided mobo with bow and stern thrusters I see the point of the docking camera. For a sailing yacht with a long-shaft single screw less so. Even if I know I'm 5cm away from the dock, I can't just stop: I estimate where and how much I need to hit the controls beforehand and a rough estimate, along with appropriate fendering, is what I have to live with even from my centre cockpit where visibility of the pontoon disappears a while before I reach it.

Now of course a camera that could read my mind and tell me where I'll be in 30 seconds time if I do what I'm intending to do would be awesome.

No, I just look where I'm going with my eyes - seems more practical to me.

I would like a camera at the bow though, or perhaps the top 1/8th of the mast, so I can see where I'm going when flying the Genoa.

Whilst they may seem like a good idea surely coming alongside uses all the helm's senses and to be possibly tranfixed by staring at a video screen may not be such a good thing.
